Mt Vernon area enjoys busy weekend of graduations and visits

Local residents and relatives gathered for commencements at Mt Vernon Township High School and Centralia High School. Families including Rockenmeyer Ansorge and Levy, Jones, and Chambliss clans traveled from St Louis Benton Cincinnati and Keenes for celebrations and to visit patients at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

The Donoho Prairie Home Bureau gathered Thursday June 1 at Byars School for lessons on child personality led by Home Advisor Elizabeth Burton and a minor lesson by Leon Tate. Mt Vernon Graduates to Receive Northwestern Degrees

A total of 3567 degrees and diplomas will be awarded at Northwestern University commencement on June 12 at Evanston campus. From Mt Vernon two students will receive Bachelor of Science degrees Nade Otis Peters of 208 N 10th and Mrs Harry Lee Sharer formerly Charlotte E Greene of Fairfield Road. Mrs Sharers husband Harry Lee Sharer of McLeansboro will also receive a degree.

Delta Theta Tau Hosts Six-Table Bridge Night

Mrs Claire Latta hosted a Delta Theta Tau bridge evening at her home with six tables. Guests included Mrs Robert Harvey. Prizes went to Mrs George Robert Beck first, Miss Bernadine Warren second, Miss Vermadel Wood third, and Mrs Charles Wilcox traveling. A business meeting preceded the party led by the new president.

Mt Vernon Education Association elects officers and delegates

Five members of the Executive Council were elected at the final Mt. Vernon Education Association meeting. William Roy elected president and delegate to the World Organization of Teaching Profession in Ottawa July 17 23. Howard Rawlinson will head the Research and High School Committees. Reida Schmidt elected secretary treasurer and chair of the Secretarial Committee. Delegates to two assemblies set for July include William Roy to Ottawa and Margaret Ann Cummings to St. Louis July 3 7.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ashley welcomed a baby girl born at 4 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Hospital weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce and unnamed. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Robertson welcomed an 8 pound 5 ounce baby boy named Robert Eugene born at 6:35 p.m. yesterday at the same hospital.

Desertion Claim: 700 Chinese Red Troops Switch Sides

Nationalists in south China report a regimental commander and more than 700 Red troops desert to them. They attribute the move to disdain for Soviet arrogance and the cruelty of Sino-Reds toward the people. The central news agency notes this as the first mainland desertion partly due to Russian dissatisfaction.

Tornado strikes five Texas villages injures eight

A fast moving tornado ripped through southeast Texas yesterday battering five villages and injuring at least eight people. The storm disrupted homes and streets as responders assessed damage in the affected areas. Local officials urged residents to avoid downed power lines and report injuries.

Self-inflicted gunshot ends life of ex-husband in Illinois

Dick Fain, 58, of Mattoon, died from gunshot wounds today after shooting himself Sunday while in his ex-wife Inez Fain’s car parked at her Farina Illinois home. Police quoted Lt. Nelson Page. Fain and ex-wife had been separated 12 years. he had threatened her life. He previously worked at Bartelsmeyer Motor Co. in Mattoon.

Library to close all day Wednesday for inventory

The Library Board voted at its regular meeting to shut the library for the entire day Wednesday for annual inventory. Inventory is conducted yearly with fiction and non fiction books checked in alternate years.

Lillian Drew Reuther Dies Former Mt Vernon Resident

Word comes of the death of Mrs. Lillian Drew Reuther a former Mt Vernon resident. She died at her Tilton Illinois home after months of ill health. Born January 7 1905 she was the daughter of William E and Florence Drew. Survived by husband Paul Reuther Tilton a daughter Mrs Herman Benefield Tilton a son Paul Jr Tilton her mother Florence Drew Tilton two brothers Virgil Drew Decatur and Herman Drew Danville and two grandchildren. Preceded by father and one brother Ray. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Youth Arrested For Theft Here

Edward Osborne, 15, was arrested by city police last night on a charge of stealing $24.50 from Grace Feigly’s home at Seventh and North streets. He was taken to the county jail this morning. Authorities said he is on parole from the St. Charles School for Boys.
