Fire Call At Mt Vernon Iron Works

Firemen were called to the Mt. Vernon Iron Co on South Sixth Street yesterday between 5 and 10 pm to control a rubbish fire with no damage reported. The report lists ministers Dale Keele Overstreet McCoy Hooker Maulding Davidson Waring and Partridge as past and current leaders of the church. Uncle Ab Smith led the church for over 30 years.

Deaths and Funerals Mrs McManamy of Mt Vernon

Mrs Nelle McManamy died at St John’s Hospital in Joplin Mo from a heart attack early today. Her son Charles McManamy is en route from Denver and unaware of the death. Funeral services will be held at 10 30 Saturday morning in Parker Mortuary chapel in Joplin. She is survived by one grandson and one son in Mt Vernon.

Charles James Fanning 74 of Nason died at Good Samaritan Hospital at 4:55 am after a period as a patient. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 pm at Fry Funeral Home Waltonville with burial in Abner Cemetery Nason. Retired coal miner born in Colona, he worked at Harco mine until 1946 and was survived by two sons James and Ronald, a sister Mary Elizabeth Maynor, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Mt. Vernon officials request motorists stay off several streets being prepared for blacktopping. The listed streets include 18th street from Broadway to Main, Main street from 18 to L and N tracks, Brief street south of Jefferson Memorial Hospital, and Ninth street from car shops south to city limits. A ten inch compacted crushed rock base has been laid and asphalt will follow. traffic now would damage the streets. Barricades and warning flares are in place.
