Injured Belle Rive Farmer Improves at Jefferson Memorial

Glen H. Phillips a well known farmer near Belle Rive is recovering at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after being pinned under a tractor when it overturned. His right arm was severely injured but he is reported to be improving today as he remains under care.

Meat Workers Seek Increase In Wages And Benefits

The CIO United Packinghouse Workers opened talks with Armour & Company and Cudahy Packing, demanding a substantial general wage increase a guaranteed annual wage a union shop and an employer financed pension health and welfare program. Current contracts expire August 11. The union represents about 30 000 Armour workers and 10 000 Cudahy workers with average hourly pay around 1.68.

Three Minor Accidents Include Hit Run in Mt Vernon

Three minor traffic incidents occurred in Mt Vernon on Monday. A parked car owned by George Morgan of Woodlawn was struck at 8 35 p m by a driver who fled the scene. A second collision involved Jack Davis Dempsey of Mulkey Town Illinois and Lawrence Hall at Tenth Street and the L and N tracks at 9 25 p m. A third crash at 5 10 p m involved Virgil York of 315 North 7th Street and Ervin Hays of Nason at the intersection of Tenth and Casby.
