A packed Mt Vernon fair weekend features a motorcycle thrill show tonight at 8:00, running horse races including the Jefferson County Derby on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and tractor pulling contests at 6:00 p.m. Saturday. Nine running events total purses of 4150 dollars, with tractor pulls offering 750 dollars.
Gov Richard B Ogilvie reiterated he will not seek a tax increase to fund the University of Illinois urging the federal government to raise grants instead The remark came during his Ask the Governor program aired on WCIA-TV in Champaign He faces Democrat Daniel Walker in the November election Meanwhile in San Francisco Senator Thomas F Eagleton denounced columnist Jack Andersons accusations of drunken driving as a damnable lie He said he will remain on the Democratic ticket as running mate to Senator George McGovern and noted there is no record of arrest for drunken or reckless driving despite speeding citations in his name
Democrats pick James O. Eastland of Mississippi to succeed Allen J. Ellender as president pro tempore after Ellender died of a heart attack. Eastland's election is expected to be formal with Senate Democrats holding a majority.
Congress moves toward final approval of a rural development bill offering about 500 million dollars annually in new grants and expanded authority to boost countryside growth. The House voted 339 to 36 to accept a compromise after 52 disputes were settled, sending the measure to the Senate.
Illinois Public Aid Department announced an 18 million dollar cost of living adjustment for public aid recipients. Gov Ogilvie's Republican administration disclosed the move minutes before a meeting of the bipartisan Illinois Legislative Advisory Commission on Public Assistance. Rep Robert Mann of Chicago, a Democrat, had planned to move for higher payments for food clothing and personal essentials, saying he had fought for adjustments since 1970.

Miss Sue Wolfe crowned queen of the 1972 Jefferson County Fair at Mt Vernon Fairgrounds. She will reign as hostess this week and compete in the Miss Illinois State Fair Queen contest in Springfield next January. First runner-up is Miss Georganna Rue. second runner-up Miss Pam Stover. Crowning by Miss Pam Kent. Judges were Mr and Mrs Walsh and Mr and Mrs Kneemeyer. Pageant directors were Mrs Roy Maxwell and Mrs Harry Stamper Jr.

Du Quoin lifts boil water order after 16 inch main break. Mayor Jack Strack says tests by the Environmental Protection Agency confirm water safe to drink. Order affected 6,700 residents of Du Quoin and nearby Sunfield Tamaroa and Dowell. Several plants resumed normal operations except DuQuoin Packing Co where full recovery is imminent.

In Miami Florida a two year old boy Ulysses Simpson Davis Jr died from suffocation after being found inside an old refrigerator left in a backyard. Earline Clark 33 was arrested on a felony charge of abandoning a refrigerator with the door on resulting in the death of a child.
