A packed Mt Vernon fair weekend features a motorcycle thrill show tonight at 8:00, running horse races including the Jefferson County Derby on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and tractor pulling contests at 6:00 p.m. Saturday. Miss Sue Wolfe crowned queen of the 1972 Jefferson County Fair at Mt Vernon Fairgrounds. She will reign as hostess this week and compete in the Miss Illinois State Fair Queen contest in Springfield next January. First runner-up is Miss Georganna Rue. second runner-up Miss Pam Stover. Du Quoin lifts boil water order after 16 inch main break. Mayor Jack Strack says tests by the Environmental Protection Agency confirm water safe to drink. Socialite wife of Piper Jr. kidnapped. ransom unknown

The socialite wife of H C Piper Jr. was abducted from their Orono home. FBI confirms the case and a ransom note was left but the amount is not disclosed. Authorities issued a six state alert and described two heavy set masked men leaving in a green sedan and a dirty yellow car.

In Miami Florida a two year old boy Ulysses Simpson Davis Jr died from suffocation after being found inside an old refrigerator left in a backyard. Earline Clark 33 was arrested on a felony charge of abandoning a refrigerator with the door on resulting in the death of a child.
