Mt Vernon firemen answered three alarms during the weekend, all minor blazes. At 10 45 a m Saturday burning papers ignited the roof of a shed at 1005 South 12th Street. At 8 10 p m Saturday a short in an electric drop cord caused minor damage at 311 Jordan Street. At 3 45 a m Sunday firemen were summoned to 516 Opdyke for smouldering papers in a waste basket filling the house with smoke.

Lawrence Gerard Dies at 69 in Mt. Vernon Funeral Planned
Lawrence F. Gerard, 69, of 725 George Street, died at 2:00 a.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital after three years of declining health. He was caretaker at the Central Church of Christ and known as the popcorn man to Mt. Vernon youth, having run the popcorn stand at the city park. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Central Church of Christ with Rev. Edwin V. Hayden and Rev. J. G. Parsons officiating. burial in St. Paul Evangelical cemetery in Columbia, Illinois. He was born March 8, 1883 in Prairie du Rocher, La., married Ida Eckert on November 12, 1913, and is survived by his wife, two sons Raymond of Pennsylvania and Lawrence of California, one daughter Luella McCoy of East St. Louis, one brother Ignatius Gerard of Prairie du Rocher, three sisters Olive Blow of St. Louis, Annie Steele and Ella DuFriend of Prairie du Rocher, and ten grandchildren. He will lie in state at Pulley Funeral Home until noon Tuesday.

An 11 year old Mt. Vernon girl Judith Ann Henn found a wallet containing eight dollars at 7 30 PM and handed it to police. Police returned the billfold to Vincent Cusamano who rewarded the girl with the full eight dollars for her honesty. The wallet also held papers valuable to the owner.

Chaney Monroe Walden of Dahlgren died of a heart attack at 6 45 a m Sunday aged 72. Born May 2 1880 he was married Oct 11 1900 to Mary Talley who preceded him in death. He belonged to Middle Creek Baptist church and the Odd Fellows Lodge. Surviving are six sons and daughters, a brother and a sister, 17 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Change of venue granted in Burton murder case
Circuit Judge Charles T. Randolph granted a venue change to Elvin L. Burton who is jailed in Jefferson County on a murder charge. S. M. Ward Benton attorney for Burton filed the motion alleging prejudice by Judge Randolph. Local authorities expect the trial in Jefferson County Circuit Court with Judge Randolph not presiding. Judge Randolph completed his circuit here last week. Judge B. W. Eovaldi of Benton will preside for the next year.

Fairfield man arrested for driving while intoxicated

Three Boys Nabbed for Shoplifting at Montgomery Ward
Three youths were nabbed for shoplifting at the Montgomery Ward store on the public square. Police said two were 12 and the third 15. They were released to a parent’s custody with no charges filed and the boys apologized to store officials.
