Bobbie G. Lee, 37, of Route 1 Walnut Hill, died at 8 35 p.m. Thursday at John Cochran Veterans Hospital in St. Louis from cancer. A 19‑year Army veteran who retired as Sergeant First Class on Oct 31 1972, he planned 20 years but ill health forced early retirement. Survived by wife Viola and children, service at Hughey Pulley Funeral Home Sunday 2 p.m. Burial Wolfe Prairie Cemetery. He was born Jan 16 1936 in Mt Vernon, served in Korea Vietnam Germany and Hawaii, and taught at Ft Sill. He was active in several veterans and fraternal groups. Burial follows.
The Sweet Corn-Watermelon Festival Shrine parade on Saturday August 11 features a fox horn aboard a two pony hitch with live fox hounds, bands, drills, and animal acts. Entry deadline is July 31 with plans for up to 200 units and riders from King City Saddle Club. Notable entrants include Mt. Vernon Federated Woman's Club Lois McGath and others from Benton Wayne City and Mt. Vernon with carriages ponies wagons and a unicycle rider.
A 16 year old visitor from Joliet saved a 15 year old Peoria boy at Rend Lake beach. He heard a cry for help, swam out to the drowning youth, pulled him to shore and applied artificial respiration to revive him. The good Samaritan was Michael Wayne Hill, son of Mr and Mrs Lester Hill formerly of Mt Vernon.
John Flander, 70, and his wife Pearl, 55, of Chicago were killed when their car missed a curve and overturned near Interstate 57 and U S 51 near Cairo. State police reported the accident occurred Thursday.
Market report lists No 1 and No 2 hogs at 51.00 to 52.00 per cwt for 200 to 230 lb animals. Sorted No 1 at 52.00 to 53.00. Mixed No 1 and No 3 hogs 200 to 250 lbs bring 50.00 to 51.00. Sows sell 38.00 to 40.00.
Chicago markets show butter up four cents with the day firm. Grain quotes include No 2 soft red wheat at 3.63 and No 2 hard red at 3.4154. Corn No 2 yellow at 2.862 and oats at 1.18. Soybeans No 2 yellow at 10.10. Previous day No 2 yellow corn traded at 2.8934.

Kenneth L. Jansen of Albers drowned Thursday while swimming in a construction pit filled with rain water near Damiansville Clinton County.
Salem Barracks No 102 and Ladies Auxiliary held a joint July meeting in Peoria for the Veterans of World War I. Past Councilor A E Baird and Lewis Brake represented the Barracks while Etha Stover and others led the Auxiliary. Highlights included a memorial service and a push for non service connected pensions, with Harold Cap Bigelow elected department commander. Downstate and allied leaders populated the installations and officers, concluding with Ethel Stover seating as president of the Third Illinois District.
Three Chicago area youths living at Giant City State Youth Camp were arrested in a stolen car case in Carbondale. A Mt. Vernon resident who left camp allegedly stole the car in Benton, then returned it to the camp and surrendered. The four juveniles were charged in the case.
The Fairgrounds host a set of bicycle and tricycle races on Monday night August 6 as part of the Sweet Corn Watermelon Festival. Ten races award first through fourth place trophies and ribbons with a 25 cent grandstand admission, and Dairy Queen treats await each contestant after racing. Registration is at the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and parental signatures are required.
Rudolph Manuel, 49, of 616 S 12th St, hospitalized after being struck by a car near the L&WN crossing on S 10th Street. Witnesses say Manuel walked into the path of Carl L. Jones, 66, of Brownsville Road, at 7 am. He was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital and listed in satisfactory condition with abrasions.
Madison county authorities arrested Jackie Jackson and Ralph Ham after 25 bricks of marijuana valued at 15 000 to 16 000 dollars on the street were found in a footlocker at a trailer home near Granite City. Tip from Arizona authorities led to the seizure from a shipment arriving from Tucson Arizona. A note inside read greetings and salutations compliments of the Tucson Police Department.
CHICAGO UPI Illinois becomes the first state to set statewide noise limits for stationary industrial sources in residential areas. The Illinois Pollution Control Board approved 61 DBA daytime limits, 51 DBA overnight, and 70 DBA in industrial parks, with compliance deadlines up to three years and fines up to 10,000 per day.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board continued examining wreckage from the Ozark plane crash near Lambert Field. Captain Arvid Linke and Lt. Charles survived with injuries. pilot Michael Williams also survived. Eyewitnesses cited lightning as a possible cause, but board officials caution against premature conclusions.

Cecil Sullivan Harrisburg executive holds nine figures in Holiday Inn tied land, bought for 116000, eyeing nationwide Holiday Inn equipment outlets.
