Lewis Rejects Two Year Coal Contract Offer
John L. Lewis rejected a two year extension proposal from northern and western coal operators. In exchange, miners would keep a three day work week until March 31, 1951, with a clause that workers would only mine when able and willing. The union called the offer ridiculous.

Mrs L E Gowler Camp Ground Dies
Mrs Cora Ellen Gowler died at 8 00 am at her Fairfield Road home after a two and a half year illness. Born near Camp Ground on June 11 1882 she was 67 years one month 16 days old. She married L E Gowler December 25 1904 and leaves one son Roy and daughters Evele Weatherfred Myrtne Greer Lucille Atkins and 13 grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 2 00 pm at Camp Ground Baptist Church with burial in East Salem cemetery. Her body lies at Myers Funeral Home this afternoon and tomorrow then at the family home until the service.

Angry Dad Slays Former Preacher in Tampa
In Tampa a 35 year old Baptist minister Rev John P Lane was shot and died after a street argument. Ward C Cornelius 52 father of Lane's young wife and former organist, was held for questioning after Lane's death. Lane and Ann Cornelius had eloped and wed in June.

Jury selection underway for Marshall trial
A circuit court jury was being chosen today to try Jerry Marshall, 34, charged with assault with intent to kill and burglary with intent to commit a felony. Marshall allegedly broke into a home on S Ninth Street and struck a woman with a shotgun. Judge B W Eavaldi of Benton presided as only four of 12 jurors had been approved at noon.
