Mark Howard Best 16, of 1708 South 14th Street Mt Vernon, died after a Route 460 crash southeast of Mt Vernon. He was a student and part time worker at Rusty’s Drive Inn. Born Sept 18 1959 in Mt Vernon he was a senior at Mt Vernon Township High School and a Park Avenue Baptist member.
Jeff Alan Webb 14 of 1712 S 4th St Mt Vernon died after an auto collision on Route 460 southeast of Mt Vernon. He was born Jan 14 162 and was the son of Jerry A Webb and Pat Webb. He belonged to Waltonville Freewill Baptist church and recently graduated from junior high. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel. He leaves his mother and stepfather Lee Smith Vernon father Jerry A Webb Marked Tree Ark one sister Jerl Allyson Webb a step brother Gaillard Smith a step sister Gaila Smith and grandparents Arthur Webb Danville Howard Petty Waltonville plus a great grandfather Ira Black Mt Vernon.

Kubiak 57 of Ashley will be held Tuesday at 10 am at St Michael s Catholic Church Radom with Father John Terepka officiating Burial will be in the church cemetery Friends may call at Hogan Funeral Home in Ashley at any time The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 8 pm today He died Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital He was WWII veteran and member of St Michael s Church Radom He was born Sept 22 1918 in Jefferson County son of Victor and Clara Kemnetz Kubiak He married Helen Pedtke on April 24 1948 at Radom She survives Also surviving are a son Paul Ashley a daughter Clara Dean Liszewski Mehlville MO four brothers Stanley Florissant MO Leo West Chester PA Edmund Chesterfield MO Conrad Leslie MO one sister Irene Povolish Nashville and four grandchildren
Leo C. Payne 64 of Route 4 died at 10 15 a m Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital He was born in Huey January 25 1912 son of James and Lora Weems Payne He married Mary Williamson October 26 1981 in Salem She survives along with two sons Dale E Payne Papillion Nebraska and Robert Joe Payne Houston Texas four grandchildren three sisters and several nieces and nephews Funeral services were held Wednesday at Hughey Pulley Funeral Home with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Zelma Johnston Sesser 88 died yesterday at daughter Larene Murray’s home in Sesser born June 23 1888 in Sesser to Wiley and Eliza Vaughn funeral arrangements incomplete at Brayfield Funeral Home Sesser survived by two sons John Wiley Johnston Wood River Hanley Johnston Carbonale two daughters Lorene Murray Lesser Violet Schuldt Oak Forest seven grandchildren eight great grandchildren preceded in death by husband James T Johnson a son and two daughters
John Edward Fogarty 67 longtime Tulsa resident and former Mt Vernon native died Saturday in Tulsa He was born March 14 1909 in Salem Oregon son of John and Pearl Fogarty A Purdue University graduate he worked at J P Divine Manufacturing in Mt Vernon He married Louise Johnson May 5 1994 who preceded him in death Survivors include three daughters D Ann Berson Pat Atkinson both of Tulsa Martha McCrady Dallas four grandchildren one brother Ed Fogarty Wilmington Delaware two sisters Ann Fogarty and Coyn Mateer Mt Vernon. Funeral held Tuesday at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Lightning hit an oil storage tank near Harco on Saturday evening, causing an explosion and setting two other tanks ablaze. No injuries were reported as flames were visible from Benton. Firemen from Harrisburg and Galatia battled the blaze through the night. tanks were on the Charles Malone farm and owned by Duke Exploration Co.
Maggie Edmison, 96, longtime Wayne City restaurant cook and resident, died Saturday at Wavyfair Restorium in Fairfield. Born Feb 6, 1880 in Wayne County to James C and Elizabeth Keen Clark, she was predeceased by husband Warren Edmison. Funeral held Tuesday at 2 p.m. Richardson Chapel Wayne City officiated by Rev. Richard McCormick. Burial in Thompson Cemetery. She is survived by four daughters Evelyn Hopkins Toledo Ohio Hazel Richards and Florene Sis Thomason Wayne City, ten grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, one brother Everett Clark Belleville and a sister Minnie Blackburn Olney.
A Sept 6 1975 auto crash in the 27000 block of Broadway led to a circuit court dismissal with prejudice after an out of court settlement. Rita M Massey sought 14500 from Ronald A Ellison claiming negligence caused a two car crash on July 18 1975 in which she was injured. The court noted all claims were compromised and settled.
A Washington Park motorcyclist, Thomas Clare Jr., 20, was killed on U S 50 near East St. Louis after his bike was struck by a car traveling on the wrong side of the road. The hit-and-run driver fled the scene and remains at large.
The United States planned a second seaborne evacuation from Lebanon on Tuesday. A helicopter carrier Iwo Jima and five ships were to move offshore to land unarmed landing ships ashore. About 14 Americans and 281 others registered for evacuation. cease-fire failure may raise numbers. Theft from a car and two home burglaries were reported weekend. John Lasdowne 3101 Lime St said two tape players and two tapes were stolen from his parked car near The Warehouse 238 Main St Saturday night. Burglars pried open a window to Bill Bradford Dr 214 Burns 3 St and ransacked the home. nothing confirmed stolen. Sheila Taylor 122 Op dyke Ave reported a digital clock radio taken weekend.
A hearing in the Rebecca Petite versus Rend Lake College Board of Trustees case is scheduled for August 13 at 1:30 p.m. The motion for judgment in favor of the defendants will be argued then. Petite filed suit in January 1975 claiming her 1974 faculty dismissal was arbitrary and capricious.
Chester Illinois report details three minor injuries from six weekend auto accidents. A guard at Menard State Correctional Center, Michael Hamilton, 37, Madison County, escaped Sunday, prompting a statewide alert as police warn he may be armed and dangerous.
The Jefferson county chapter of the American Red Cross collected 1,161 pints in fiscal year 1975-76 ending June 30, about 92 percent of the county quota. A 100 percent total of 1,258 pints is hoped for the current year. Blood is provided to local hospitals without charge. sponsoring agencies will be named. The body of Daniel Gearhart, 34, an American mercenary executed in Angola, arrived at Kennedy Airport in a plain wooden casket. Gearhart from Kensington, Maryland, served in Vietnam's Special Forces and was recruited via Soldier of Fortune Magazine. He is survived by his wife Sheila and four children. Funeral services were planned for Wednesday.
Walter Moss Jr. 22 of Harrisburg died when his car ran off U S 45 in Ledford Saline County struck two porches and overturned. The first porch roof caved in but no one was hurt. Ledford is an unincorporated community between Carrier Mills and Harrisburg.

Springfield AP Gov Daniel Walker vetoed a bill to create the Illinois Low in Spirits Areas Land Use and Community Development Authority to issue bonds for schools parks and sewers claiming it would create a superagency with overlapping functions and no funds for operations. The veto mirrors a September rejection of a similar measure by Rep Wyvetter Young.
An intruder scaled the fence at the White House and was detected by Garland and another officer. Garland, 25, will be placed on administrative leave pending a routine grand jury investigation. He became an officer last January in the EPS, the uniformed branch of the Secret Service.
The White House announced Ford would meet Maryland delegates at a White House reception today and invited Pennsylvania's 103 delegates for a Thursday session. All 43 Maryland delegates support Ford, most Pennsylvania delegates back the President, while Ron Nelsen cautions Ford is not taking chances. Carter told Time his major problem is recognition as voters still do not know his stance on issues. Tower predicted Ford will win the nomination and general election, praising John Connally for No. 2. Eugene McCarthy said Carter and Ford are alike and has not chosen a running mate.
Deputies investigated a Moore area crash on Richview Road two miles south of Cravat. The weekend collision left Neer with contusions and abrasions and the time of the accident was unclear this morning.
