Hundreds of flood battered residents in east Tennessee and southeast Kentucky headed home to clear mud from houses and begin rebuilding. Flash floods killed eight people, five of them from one area, as snakes and disease threats added danger.

Rebecca Ritchey of 308 South Ninth Street, a 21 year old nurse at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, was crowned Miss Jefferson County 1955 at the Mt. Vernon State Fair pageant. She will reign a year and later contend for Miss Illinois State Fair 1965 in Springfield. Miss Ritchey, nicknamed Becky, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Ritchey of McLeansboro and previously held Miss Hamilton County in the McLeansboro Fair two years ago.
Mt Vernon will host a Thursday meeting to start a feasibility study under the Urban Renewal Act for 18.7 acres. City Urban Renewal director Charles Edward Smith said the Mt Vernon Planning Commission and a St Louis planning consultant will meet with Gerald E Fieldhouse of the Housing and Home Finance Agency to plan the study. The area is viewed as a potential site for expansion of the city.
Superintendent El l is Henson states Mt Vernon Community College expansion is not the motive in a study of possible expansion of School District 201 under urban renewal. He says the study was misinterpreted as showing bad faith toward a junior college and that the district supports a superior area junior college while students are cared for until one is established.
The city and Mt Vernon School District study a development near the campus under a federal Urban Renewal program. The school board would approve or reject, with the local share funded by property purchase credits from within a quarter mile over six years. If approved, the site could host any educational use for district 301. A $59,000 federal grant finances the project.
Editor Jerry H Elliston outlines a Waltonville written piece on Rend Lake area archaeology. Volunteers in 1960 aided by anthropologists sought prehistoric sites and recovered artifacts from cultures around the Mississippi Ohio river junction. Findings include Folsom spear points dating over 9 000 years and evidence of Paleo Indian activity near Cahokia Mounds and related mound complexes.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. drew crowds in Winnetka last night with a call for a mass march on City Hall. He urged a turnout of at least 10,000 and said the country must act to end racial oppression. Police prepared for about 3,000 marchers as Chicago awaits the demonstration.
In Mt. Vernon a downtown sidewalk sale seller recovers a mislaid dress from a store rack. Mrs. Albert Parker had brought the dress to be altered. unaware it belonged to her, her husband displayed it on the $2 rack, where a shopper quickly bought it. The piece of local lore sits alongside a Social Security notice about substantial monthly benefits and estate values for workers, warning of generous future payouts regardless of work status.
President Johnson and aides discuss steps to strengthen U S forces in South Viet Nam amid reports a ground to air missile might have downed an FAC Phantom jet. Ray Luchsinger of Dix and longtime Jefferson County civic leader died at 2 22 p m Saturday at St Marys Hospital in Centralia after a brief illness He was 70 years seven months and 29 days old A farmer and former teacher he served in World War I and World War II on the Jefferson County Selective Service Board for 20 years earning a presidential citation He also served on boards of the First State Bank of Dix and the Jefferson County Mutual Insurance Co Surviving are his wife Dora Boggs Luchsinger a daughter Barbara Beth and a sister L F Murphy Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 11 a m at Osborn Funeral Home Dix burial at Zion Grove Cemetery He lay in state after 6 p m today.
