Nixon on Way Home to Meet Eisenhower

Sen. Richard Nixon travels from National Airport to Denver to meet Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower at Colorado headquarters then returns to Whittier for a series of welcome events and campaign planning with his wife and daughters. He is expected to report to Eisenhower on harmony efforts within the Republican camp after the convention.

Injured In Rural Road Collision Near Ina

Two men were hurt in a 3:45 collision on a rural road southeast of Ina involving a car driven by Charles Dalby and a pickup driven by Virgil Kash. Dalby suffered a head laceration, Sweetin a cut on the arm and a head injury. Both were treated by a physician. Kash escaped injury. The crash caused heavy damage to both vehicles on the Jefferson Franklin county line road half a mile east of state route 37.

Warning to stay off newly oiled streets in Mt Vernon

County officers warned motorists and bicyclists to keep off freshly oiled streets after barricades were broken on Gilbert and Westcott streets. Deputy Harley Harlow cited unauthorized use of the roads and warned that further violations would be prosecuted. no arrests were reported.

Explosion Hit Home on South Ninth Street

Mt. Vernon rural fire department responded at 8:25 a.m. today to the home of Clifford Ackley beyond the city on South Ninth Street. Firemen said the stove caused the blaze and that damage was limited to the stove upon arrival.

Hit Run Case Reported Here in Mt Vernon

A hit and run driving case was reported to Mt. Vernon police last night. A car owned by L H Patterson of 1003 South Seventh Street was struck on the left rear fender while parked in the 100 block of North 11th Street. The unknown driver fled the scene.

Close case of stolen beer cleaned up by apology

Oasis tavern owner Ben Jackson reported a case of beer stolen. The thief returned, apologized, and paid for the beer. no charges were filed as police closed the case.

Woman Returns Counterfeit Scented Bill to Police

A woman turned a purported counterfeit $1 bill over to Mt. Vernon police yesterday. Investigators confirmed the note was genuine and returned it to the rightful owner.

Seoul Korea American Maj. Gen. James Clyde Fry, commander of the U S Second Division, said his troops would resist any Chinese drive to seize Old Baldy and T-Bone hills. Allies Walk Out On Talks For A Week In Korea

Allied negotiators at Panmunjom accuse the Communists of hypocrisy and suspend the truce talks for a week. UN envoy Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison Jr. says he will return August 3, ending the first open session in three weeks. Eighteen off the record meetings since July 4 failed to break the prisoner exchange deadlock. In Tokyo Gen. Clark says talks stalled as the Communists refuse to admit a large percentage of Chinese prisoners will not return.

Eisenhower Defers Comment On Stevenson Nomination

General Dwight D. Eisenhower declined to comment on the Democratic nomination of Governor Stevenson of Illinois for president and on President Truman’s speech against Republicans. Campaign HQ indicated he might speak later after Stevenson’s running mate is chosen. Eisenhower is vacationing about 70 miles west of here.
