Numerous outings include Evansville trips and Dixon Springs 4 H campers among many names and places.
John Berry and Rosemary Billups of Mt Vernon marry license issued. Carroll Ray Odung wed Flor fence Louise Lasley of Benton. James Odorn of Benton and Loretta Neal of Ewing listed. William D. Smothers and Mary Wit Blackwell of Marion also licensed.
The Women’s Society of Christian Service groups at First Methodist hold meetings Tuesday at 2 30 pm for Lucy Webb Hayes Isabella Thoburn Jenny Hartzell and 6 30 pm Clara Swain on the church lawn for a picnic Husbands and friends welcome The meeting may shift to the church in rain Other notes list Varnell Rebekah Lodge activities 65 family White Carr York reunion events guest list and a bridal shower.

H G Pop Maynor an FBI agent in southern Illinois receives a 25 year service award from director J Edgar Hoover. He operates from Springfield and Golconda and began federal service in 1923 after a career as a teacher and lawyer including time as assistant superintendent at Pontiac reformatory before joining the bureau in 1927.
Fairfield Illinois July 26 Carl Shelton former gang chief slain October 23 near Fairfield. Unsolved case. rivalries over gambling jurisdiction hinted. Slayers fled after firing about 20 rounds from a dark sedan. Surviving aides Ray Walker and Earl Shelton Jr. tied to the case. Authorities recount a long feud with Charlie Birger’s gang era.
The Woodlawn 4 H Club met July 22 at the Woodlawn Christian church lawn. Bessie Burgett and Jean Costely spoke, with Fay elda Champ and Bonita Mefford providing entertainment. Birthdays for Mary and Bessie Burgett were noted with gifts. Recreation and refreshments followed. Next regular meeting set for August 12.
Sixty three Jefferson county 4-H youths returned home after two Dixon Springs camps July 19 to 21 and July 22 to 24. Thirty seven in the first group and 26 in the second. Red Cross swimming certificates were awarded to many. Camp activities included sports, handicraft, newspaper work, and dining room duties with a camp paper published.
Mr and Mrs Meredith Carr of 501 Harrison welcomed daughter Mary Catherine born at home Saturday July 24. Mr and Mrs Willard Wright welcomed a nine pound five ounce daughter born at 10 25 Saturday morning at Jefferson Memorial Hospital named Tempa O Rea. Mr and Mrs Charles L Foster of Fairfield welcomed an eight pound nine and one half ounce daughter born at 10 20 pm Sunday at Jefferson named Marla Jeane. A son was born at 11 pm Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital to Mr and Mrs James Hayes of Route 6 Mt Vernon weighing six pounds seven ounces. Mr and Mrs Thomas Lambert of 1120 South 24th street welcomed a seven pound daughter born at 9 pm Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital.
St Louis resident James Brandis flew to the local field yesterday and Tulsa visitor Harry Horton stopped by on Sunday. Others in the mix included James Wyatt from Dyesburg Earl Hicks of Hot Springs and S Wilson of Little Rock plus George Toyota from Chickasha and Paul Finefrock from Norman. John Upchurch aged 32 was treated at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital after an overdose of sleeping pills. His condition this morning was reported as good.

William B. Cunningham 36 of Centralia dies at 11:35 p m Sunday in hospital He was an oil refinery worker born July 16 1912 in Bald Hill township Jefferson County He married Viola Altenbaumer December 28 1941 and is survived by wife parents one son Jerry five brothers and three sisters Funeral services set for Wednesday 2:00 p m at Myers Chapel with Rev Thomas E Harper officiating burial in Evergreen Cemetery friends may call after 10 a m Tuesday
Burrell Hawkins of Texico died at 11 15 p m Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital after a several months illness. He was 66 years, nine months and six days old. Services will be Tuesday at 2 00 p m at Antioch Christian church with Rev R L Thorpe of Centralia officiating, burial in Antioch cemetery. Osborn Funeral Home in Dix handles arrangements. Hawkins was a farmer born September 18 1881 in Texico, son of Davis and Nancy Jane Hawkins. He married Myrtle Thornburg 42 years ago. she preceded him in death over 30 years ago. He was a member of Antioch Christian church. Survived by two daughters Inez Stockton of Mt Vernon and Elsie Christensen of Lombard Illinois, one grandson, three brothers Rev Oscar Hawkins Rev Orville Hawkins of Salem and Duke Hawkins of Texico, and two sisters Miss Lucy Hawkins and Mrs Nola Hawkins of Texico.
Clyde Johnson an 18 year old from Edwardsville Kansas suffered injuries to his right hand in a spill during motorcycle races yesterday at the Mt. Vernon fairgrounds. He received emergency treatment at Jefferson County Memorial hospital and was later released.
Two youthful ex convicts who killed seven people during a 14 day Ohio crime spree were in Mt Vernon on July 16 according to today’s reports from St. Louis. The killers John C West 25 and Robert Mark Daniels 24 were there briefly to place two girl friends on a train to St Louis.
State Democratic candidates speak at a rally tomorrow at 2:00 PM at the Salem Reunion. Speakers include Paul Douglas for U S Senator Adlai Stevenson for governor and Edward J Barrett for secretary of state, with other state ticket candidates also listed.
Thieves broke into Roy's Tavern, 1121 Perkins Avenue, during the weekend, stealing $50 in cash and two and a half cases of whiskey after breaking the front door glass.
County Judge Frank H. Walker announced the appointment of Glenn Throgmorton E L Dare and E E Outland as trustees of the newly voted Rural Fire Protection District.
