Local residents and visitors mingle through a busy period of travel and gatherings. Notables include Nellie Holmes retiring to NaSaliec and staying with Naomi Springhorn and Gertrude Fulerton in Peoria, while Leo Feltenstein visits Mt. Vernon on business. Numerous family visits span Harvey, St Louis, DuQuoin, East St. Louis, and Chicago with hospital stays, reunions, and vacations noted across Illinois and Michigan.
Miss Eleanor Hulbert daughter of Mr and Mrs Alva Hulbert of 807 south 22nd street wed Paul Sanders son of Mr and Mrs Cecil Sanders of Benton Illinois on Monday July 4 at 10 30 am in the bridal home. Ceremony conducted by Rev Loy L Curry uncle of the bride. Attendant was her sister Miss Imogene Knappier. Best man James Dillingham. Two songs were sung by Miss Carmen Burgess with piano by Miss Norma Sanders. The bride wore an organdy afternoon dress with blue satin buttons and a white picture hat. The couple plan to reside in Benton after a reception at the groom s home.
Jefferson Memorial lists admissions including John Bourland Mrs LaVada Morgan Miss Cora Cooper Mrs Lily Parsons Emery Wilkey Miss Doris Jean Stewart Mrs Emma Kreher and others with infant Jay T Stanford Opdyke. Discharges include Mabel Williams and infant Teresa Arlene among many. Good Samaritan ward adds Rose Ann Degenhart Laura Jane Phillips and others with several infants.
Charley Murray 62 died at 10 20 am yesterday in St Louis Missouri. He will be buried in West Salem cemetery Mt Vernon where funeral services are held at 2 00 pm Wednesday with Rev Ace Summers officiating. Body to lie at Myers Chapel from 9 30 am Wednesday until the service. He was born November 22 1886 in Vienna Illinois and married May 4 1920 to Millie Curtis who survives.
The New York Central Railroad seeks permission from the Illinois Commerce Commission to discontinue passenger trains 462 and 463 between Chicago and Harrisburg. The trains serve Danville Paris Lawrenceville Mt. Carmel and Carmi. A hearing is likely in September. The railroad reported a loss of 183000 for the year ending March 31 1949.
Clyde Wells and Roy Mandrell, Waltonville residents, were injured in a late night crash two miles west of Ashley on U S Highway 460. Wells had a broken right foot and facial injuries. Mandrell suffered lip lacerations, a nose abrasion, and shoulder bruises. A car driven by Mandrell was forced off the road by another vehicle and struck a tree. Wells was a passenger. They received emergency care at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
The Trinity Episcopal church at 1100 Harrison Street becomes Mt Vernon’s first church with air conditioning. The new system, a gift from two anonymous donors, was used during yesterday’s services.

A Saturday evening gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Evan Smith's Bele Rive residence celebrated Mrs. Smith's birthday. Guests enjoyed a supper and games with prizes awarded. The Blue Belt Club presented her a gift and a large birthday cake was shared.
On Tuesday July 26 Green Hills Country Club hosts Ladies Day with a blind hole tournament for golfers.
The fourth annual family reunion in memory of Rev Carter J Kelley was held at J L Buford's home in Franklin Avenue. Attendees included Kelley relatives from Pana Shelbyville Fairfield Carmi Princeton Indiana Centralia and LaSalle with a telegram from John Barr Foster in Birmingham Alabama. The next gathering is planned for Princeton Indiana.

The iron lung from Mt. Vernon Fire Department was moved to Centralia emergency polio center yesterday afternoon for infantile paralysis cases. Donated by the Central Trades and Labor Council, the life saving equipment answered the polio center’s appeal for assistance.
Senator McCarran lashed out at a United Nations official over a testimony by Witness No. 8 alleging the U.N. Secretariat is terrorized by Communist agents. He called the claim the nuttiest story yet. The House committee also issued a Keeney report accusing a former State Department employee of acting as a courier for the Communist Party.

Twelve communities will join Winds long range hospital construction within two years under a 1947 plan. Projects depend on local funding, with one third of costs raised locally. State and federal money fund the rest from a $52 million omnibus program signed last week. Communities listed include Metropolis, Chester, Vandalia, Pekin, Cesero, and Mt. Vernon, with beds ranging from 18 to 880.

Mr and Mrs Albert R Farmer 309 South Tenth Street welcomed Barbara Ann born 10 10 am Sunday at Jefferson Memorial weighing 6 12. Mr and Mrs Bob Henry Rochelle welcomed Deborah Kay born there July 12. Mrs Henry is Alice Clark formerly of Mt Vernon. Mr and Mrs Verdon Lane Route 2 Mr Vernon welcomed Charles Conard born at home today.
Stanley Wilkins, 19 months, son of Birdie Wilkins of north 26th street, was slightly hurt by a car collision at Tenth and Perkins Saturday at 9:45 pm. He received treatment for a facial cut at Jefferson Memorial Hospital and was sent home. Drivers were Clyde Nadolski of RFD 1 and Birdie Wilkins.
Mayor Milton Forsyth and his wife and son Jim have returned from a vacation trip in Canada. They stayed in Kenora and enjoyed fishing on Lake of the Woods during their trip.
The Egyptian Firefighters Association held its annual convention in Salem Illinois on July 25 electing Ernest Glenn of Rossclare as secretary to succeed Victor Stocks of Carterville. Other officers were re elected including John Mason Cairo president Ray Barney Herrin first vice president Roy Johnson Harrisburg second vice president Urba Hanson Murphysboro treasurer and Paul Partridge Mr Vernon named to the executive board.
