In Long An Province near Saigon enemy forces used a blindfolded South Vietnamese prisoner as a decoy during an all night clash 18 miles southwest of Saigon. Ten Americans of the 9th Infantry Division were killed and nine wounded as U S bombers pounded a North Vietnamese Viet Cong unit while artillery rained on an 800 yard diameter area. A Claymore mine killed three enemies behind the bound prisoner. Casualties included two American helicopter crewmen killed. Also fighting involving Australian and New Zealand troops near Saigon produced heavy resistance with unknown casualties. South Vietnamese troops uncovered two weapon caches northwest of Saigon and the U S 1st Infantry Division found another cache north of the city.
