Mt Vernon area mourns as 18 year old William Joseph Sinks Jr. drowns at Jaycee Lake while camping with family. He and 16 year old friend John Hughey swam to check area. Hughey tried to help, Sinks exhausted, father William J Sinks Sr. also jumped in but nearly drowned. Scuba teams recovered the body from 12 to 15 feet.

Sandburg Dies at 89 Remembered Poet of Lincoln
Carl Sandburg, 89, noted biographer of Lincoln and Pulitzer Prize winner, died Saturday near Connemara at Flat Rock North Carolina. His cremation and funeral at St John’s in the Wilderness Episcopal Church will be followed by scattering ashes at Rememberance Rock in Galesburg Illinois. His wife of 50 years Lillian Sandburg survived him. He lived in Flat Rock for over two decades and was known for songs of mountain people and railroad workers as well as a long Lincoln biography that earned his first Pulitzer Prize.
