Mrs Martha Overturf of St Louis visits Mt Vernon this week. Many residents and visitors travel to St Louis Chicago Evansville and nearby towns for shopping business and leisure. Notable stops include Camp Lake Hubert Canton and the WLS Grand Ole Opry with numerous family visits and social gatherings across Mt Vernon Belle Rive Carbondale and surrounding communities.

Miss Mary Gregg Bruner daughter of Rev. and Mrs Bruner of Indianapolis married J Kirby Riley in the Chapel of Disciples Church on the University of Chicago campus in Chicago. Officiating was Bruner the bride’s father. The couple reside at 6226 South Kimbark Avenue Chicago.

Mt V Sopranos Enter Contest at Chicago Festival

Jacqueline Louise Williams and Edith Mae Garrison have entered the vocal solo contest of the 21st Chicagoland Music Festival, sponsored by Chicago Tribune Charities Inc. If they advance to the finals they will perform before an audience expected over 90,000 at Soldiers Field on Saturday evening August 19. Guest star director Philip Maxwell announced Alec Templeton, a blind pianist and composer, as the festival’s guest in 1950.

Salem Reunion Opens as Veterans Gather in Salem

The 67th Marion County Soldiers and Sailors reunion began in Salem Illinois with Grand Army of the Republic members attending. The weeklong event features parades politics picnicking carnival contests stage shows and partner dancing. George Bauer of Effingham addressed the crowd at the memorial stage in Bryan Park.

Taft Calls for Tax Boost to Sustain Long Mobilization

Washington July 24 Senator Taft Ohio says the nation must remain partially mobilized for 10 to 15 years and advocates new taxes on everyone to cover added annual defense costs estimated between 10 and 20 billion dollars. He warned a new normal, with about 20 percent of national production devoted to mobilization, may be permanent until the threat from Russia subsides.

First Draftees Get Exams Today

Illinois begun physical examinations for its first draftees since Korea began, with 150 men from Chicago draft board No. 22 starting at 8 a.m. and 150 from board No. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Army Air Force center in Chicago. Downstate pre-induction tests for 250 men from 16 counties start August 7 in St. Louis.

Minnie Thompson Dies at 67 Funeral Today

Minnie Thompson, 67, died at 2 45 p m Saturday at 117 South Second Street four days after turning 67. Funeral services were at 2 00 p m today at Myers Chapel Rev Edwin V Hayden officiating burial in Oakwood Cemetery. She was born July 18 1883 in Randolph County Illinois daughter of Jacob and Catherine Winkelmann and lived in Mt Vernon 45 years. She married Winton Thompson August 3 1905 who survives. She was a Royal Neighbors of America member and is also survived by brother Rudy Winkelmann of Los Angeles sisters Della Hank and Amelia Eaton and foster daughter Lorene Brandmeyer.

4 H campers depart for second week at Lake West Frankfort

Four H club members return home after a past week at Lake West Frankfort and are replaced by more 4-H girls and boys for the camp's second week. The session runs from today through Saturday July 29. Young fishermen sign up for rodeo here August 26

Tom Peckenpaugh, 10, of 320 South Fourth Street, is the first junior fisherman to register for the Better Fishing Rodeo set for August 26 at the Gun and Sportsmans Club lake seven miles north of Mt. Vernon. In Mt. Vernon and Jefferson county, youngsters may register at Mt. Vernon city hall by signing the register book. So far 22 county youths had registered, with Carolyn Faulkner, 9, the first girl to sign up. Rodeo chairman Ansorge urged all youths to hurry to the city hall to place their names on the dotted line. Transportation to the lake will be provided if needed. Participants supply their own fishing gear. bait options include cane poles, worms, crayfish or artificial lures. Prizes await winners in multiple divisions for both genders, and hot dogs and soda will be served. Some contest fishing will occur from a boat.

Priests Robbed of $13,000 Collection

In Cleveland two men with silk-stocking masks broke into a parish house and robbed three priests of 13000 dollars. The money came from a five day parish bazaar and carnival and yesterday's collection at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in southeast Cleveland. The robbers cut phone lines and forced a kitchen window.

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Frank Hawkins of Kell welcomed a daughter Brenda Sue born Saturday night at 11 55 at Good Samaritan Hospital. A son Roger Lynn arrived at Jefferson Memorial Hospital at 8 40 this morning to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snodsmith of 325 Harrison Street, weighing 6 pounds 9% ounces. Marlin Ray is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Oscar Klingler born July 17 at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs. Blaine Marlow of Fairfield Road received word yesterday of a son born to her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Carl J. Sanders Jr. of Long Beach, California. A daughter was born Sunday morning in Chicago to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Metcalf, their second child. Mr. Metcalf is a former Mt. Vernon resident.
