Vernon Bright 60 of 101 Castleton Ave died early today of a heart attack. He was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital at 7:10 a.m. Funeral services are Friday at 10 a.m. at St Marys Catholic Church with the Rev James P Burke officiating. Burial at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Pulley Funeral Home. Survivors include Emma Ferguson Bright, his wife, son Charles Bright Evansville Ind daughter Wanda June Kaiping St Ann Mo stepfather Larney Marshall Cobden and five grandchildren. He was born Aug 19 1908 in Fancy Farm Ky. He and his wife ran Maple Grove Shelter Care Home on West Main Street.

Joseph M. Welles of 901 Big Four Street Eldorado and former Mt. Vernon resident died at 3 40 p.m. Tuesday at Pearce Hospital. He operated a feed and produce store in Eldorado and New Haven before retirement 15 years ago. Burial will be in Lindale Memorial Garden cemetery at Eldorado Thursday at Martin Funeral Home with Rev Edward Minor officiating. He was married to Della M. Echols of Mt. Vernon who died in 1955. Survivors include one son S. E. (Gene) Welles of Mt. Vernon a daughter Mrs Genevieve McCoy of Eldorado two sisters Mrs Ethel Shaw of Alton and Mrs Mabel Orr of Wheaton Ill and three grandchildren.

City police reported five automobile accidents with no injuries. At 1:25 a.m. a car driven by Jewell Fleehart hit a telephone pole on east Broadway near 3rd Street, with damage over $100. A 11:21 a.m. crash at 12th Street and Jordan involved Robert Eaton’s truck and Harold Parker’s car, with damages over $75 and $100 respectively. At 1:22 p.m. Donald Novak and Dixie Crowley collided on S. 10th Street. Crowley’s car damage about $75, Novak's none. At 8:56 p.m. two cars in Park Plaza lot driven by Bonnie Hammock and Mabel Taylor each over $100 damage. A prior two-car crash on Salem Road and Oakland Ave involved Louis Stube and Paul E. Smith, each about $100 damage. No arrests.
