Soldier Killed In Auto Accident

A two car collision on U S Highway 50 near O Fallon fatally injures 21 year old Fred Simpson Jr of Harrisburg. He dies of a skull fracture at St. Elizabeths Hospital. Also injured are Ben Hamm 38 and his son Vernon of O Fallon. Cpl Zoorl Mitchell 19 of Harrisburg and Spt Woodrow Watham 31 of St Paul Minn, enlisted men stationed at the Air Force Base at Belleville.

4-H Club Meetings and Events Highlight July Schedule

Several 4-H clubs report meeting notes and upcoming events. The Top Notchers led by Betty Jaycee Beal meet July 23 at 1 30. West Side Bob Cats hosted Mason Newell with a talk by Richard Wyerspalla. next meeting July 20 at the leader’s home. Waltonville Happy Hustlers held July 17 with 14 members and 9 visitors. a local 4-H day is set for July 28 at Waltonville gym. talks and demonstrations followed by a vocal selection. Wolf Prairie Hustlers gathered July Saturday for a talk by Phyllis Edmisson on Old Folks At Home. Mary Ann Tanehill and others led demonstrations. August 12 at the leader’s home.

Mt Vernon Club Picnic and Community Meetings

Mt Vernon Junior Woman's Club hosted a summer picnic at City Park with Priscilla Grate as chair and guests including Merle Rogers and Helen Ferguson. Summersville Home Bureau met at Mrs Clarence McCauley’s home with lesson on prejudices led by Mrs W W Bufkin. Royal Neighbor Social Club planned a Friday noon covered dish at the city park. Optimist Club heard a film presentation by George Swingle on Wisconsin fishing trips and Reedfoot and Crab Orchard lakes. Boys Work update by Kenneth Wilson on the Junior Police movement. First Methodist Choir announced a 7:30 rehearsal.

Woman Slain by 11 Year Old Boy in California

In Martinez California 11 year old Thomas Harrington shot and killed 42 year old Daisy Ebling who answered a knock at her Mt View grocery. Sheriff James Long cited a motive of wanting money as stated by the boy, who later admitted the shooting. Deputy district attorney Wakefield Taylor said the boy will be charged with first degree murder with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment due to his age.

Waters Rising in Southeast Kansas

Waters rise as Southeast Kansas braces for renewed flooding after overnight rains. Thousands of acres of corn land in the lower Neosho River Valley are inundated while high waters surge. Emporia, at the fork of the Cottonwood and Neosho Rivers, remains largely isolated but easing from floods in nearby east central Kansas.

Irving Potash, manager of the CIO farmers joint council, became the ninth of 12 indicted Communist party officials to surrender to federal authorities. The group is charged with advocating overthrow of the U S government by violence. Potash posted 5000 bail with Civil Rights Congress representatives and was released.
