Local residents and guests travel and visit across Illinois and Missouri. Canadians, Texans, and Chicagoans extend visits to Mt. Vernon and Zeil area families, with several trips to St. Louis for business and leisure.
A two car collision on U S Highway 50 near O Fallon fatally injures 21 year old Fred Simpson Jr of Harrisburg. He dies of a skull fracture at St. Elizabeths Hospital. Also injured are Ben Hamm 38 and his son Vernon of O Fallon. Cpl Zoorl Mitchell 19 of Harrisburg and Spt Woodrow Watham 31 of St Paul Minn, enlisted men stationed at the Air Force Base at Belleville.
Several 4-H clubs report meeting notes and upcoming events. The Top Notchers led by Betty Jaycee Beal meet July 23 at 1 30. West Side Bob Cats hosted Mason Newell with a talk by Richard Wyerspalla. next meeting July 20 at the leader’s home. Waltonville Happy Hustlers held July 17 with 14 members and 9 visitors. a local 4-H day is set for July 28 at Waltonville gym. talks and demonstrations followed by a vocal selection. Wolf Prairie Hustlers gathered July Saturday for a talk by Phyllis Edmisson on Old Folks At Home. Mary Ann Tanehill and others led demonstrations. August 12 at the leader’s home.
Mt Vernon Junior Woman's Club hosted a summer picnic at City Park with Priscilla Grate as chair and guests including Merle Rogers and Helen Ferguson. Summersville Home Bureau met at Mrs Clarence McCauley’s home with lesson on prejudices led by Mrs W W Bufkin. Royal Neighbor Social Club planned a Friday noon covered dish at the city park. Optimist Club heard a film presentation by George Swingle on Wisconsin fishing trips and Reedfoot and Crab Orchard lakes. Boys Work update by Kenneth Wilson on the Junior Police movement. First Methodist Choir announced a 7:30 rehearsal.
In Martinez California 11 year old Thomas Harrington shot and killed 42 year old Daisy Ebling who answered a knock at her Mt View grocery. Sheriff James Long cited a motive of wanting money as stated by the boy, who later admitted the shooting. Deputy district attorney Wakefield Taylor said the boy will be charged with first degree murder with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment due to his age.
Waters rise as Southeast Kansas braces for renewed flooding after overnight rains. Thousands of acres of corn land in the lower Neosho River Valley are inundated while high waters surge. Emporia, at the fork of the Cottonwood and Neosho Rivers, remains largely isolated but easing from floods in nearby east central Kansas.

Mr and Mrs Jack Smith of Bluford welcomed a son named Allen born at 10 am today at Good Samaritan hospital.
Mr and Mrs Frank Richardson hosted a buffet at their College Avenue home on Saturday July 17 to announce the engagement of their daughter Wanda Lee Richardson to Guy Wood Jr son of Mr and Mrs Guy A Wood of 416 South 20th Street Friends heard a simulated news broadcast as part of the reveal Miss Richardson a Mt Vernon Township High School graduate class of 1945 formerly with Sohio Petroleum Co now with Kingwood OW Co Mr Wood a Mt Vernon graduate class of 1940 attended University of Tennessee Knoxville earning a BS in Business Administration this spring Sigma Mu fraternity member now employed at King County Federal Savings and Loan Association
Good Samaritan admitted multiple patients including Mrs. Ernest Greery and Mrs. L. W. Brooks, with discharge details for several individuals such as Mrs. Hesper Folger. Additional admissions include Samuel J. Jines and infant Barney Clevenger, with discharges for Sam H. Boyer.
A film studio seeking a girl to star in a movie about 4-H clubs received 10 000 snapshots and chose one entrant, but later lost the application and cannot identify the chosen girl. The search for the hopeful star continues as the studio aims to locate the mystery applicant with Hollywood potential.

Irving Potash, manager of the CIO farmers joint council, became the ninth of 12 indicted Communist party officials to surrender to federal authorities. The group is charged with advocating overthrow of the U S government by violence. Potash posted 5000 bail with Civil Rights Congress representatives and was released.
Millionaire Harry K. Thaw died February 22, 1947, at his Miami Beach home and left a gross estate of 1,211,094.37 dollars. His will directs 10,000 dollars to Evelyn Nesbit Montani or her son Russell Thaw, a link to the jealousy that led to the Stanford White murder on New York’s Madison Square Garden roof garden decades ago.
Dewey Lee Beck three year old son of Mr and Mrs Dewey Beck of 1419 north 11th street suffered bruises to his shoulder this morning in a fall from his tricycle. He was treated at Jefferson County Memorial hospital.
