Local residents and visitors travel widely with trips to Canada including Quebec Montreal Toronto and Ottawa. Several families from Mt Vernon Bluford Wayne City and Woodlawn visit relatives in Indiana Wisconsin Minnesota Kansas and Illinois. Military and academic attendees join gatherings while others return from vacations and business trips.
Emmett Anderson Tacoma grand Exalted Ruler will visit the Mt Vernon Elks club with wife and W G Malthy Joliet president of Illinois State Elks Association. They come after dedicating a new Elks home in Fairfield and will attend a post meeting reception after 9 30 p m with local members wives invited.
James W. Harvell, 90, longtime Alexander County farmer, died yesterday on his Tamms area farm. He leaves seven sons and four daughters, all living, along with 63 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. He had 142 grandchildren in total.
Mr and Mrs Norbert Bossen of Clinton Iowa welcomed a daughter Linda Gale born July 3 at Jane Lamb Hospital. Weighing six pounds six ounces, the baby is the couple's first child. Mrs Bossen is formerly Marjorie Gilbert of this city. Mr and Mrs Ralph Harding Hayes welcomed a daughter Judith Sue born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Frost of Mt Vernon welcomed a daughter Ramona Sue born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs Lloyd Roeder of Route 2 Mt Vernon welcomed a daughter also born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital, named Ramona Sue.
Oleta Roberson of Mt. Vernon married O C Page of Mt. Vernon in a July 18 ceremony at the groom’s Lincoln home. Attendants were Ralph Page and family. The couple will reside at 1300 South 24th Street Mt. Vernon after a wedding trip. Page works for Family Protection Life Insurance Co. in Mt. Vernon.
Field Unit members and their families and 4-H Club members will meet at Tony Pitchford home on Tolle Road Tuesday July 26 at eight p m.
The Mt. Vernon Junior Chamber of Commerce held its regular meeting at Totel Em merson with President Roger Webb leading. Committees were appointed for the coming year and Dr. Roy Highsmith spoke on polio myelitis emphasizing the March of Dimes fund drive. Welcoming remarks by Art Laird welcomed new members Allan Tyglaney Dr James Setzekorn Willis M Monid and Vernon Talbott.
The Amvet Auxiliary Fifth District will hold a meeting in Salem Illinois on Thursday July 28. Luncheon reservations must be in by Saturday July 23. Call 3255 J to arrange reservations and transportation.
A charivari and shower was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Champ in Woodlawn Saturday evening July 16 in honor of their son Earl Champ who married Miss Shirley Lamkie July 2 in Morganfield Ky. Mrs. Champ is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lamkie of Belle Rive. Mr. and Mrs. Champ are making their home in Mt. Vernon where Mr. Champ is employed. The couple received several beautiful and useful gifts.
Lively Grove, IL reports the spirit manifestations at Tony Greten's farm home halted. Rev Edward Dahmus, the Catholic priest who investigated unusual occurrences including a flying pencil, says the case is closed after two weeks with no sightings.
16 year old Shirley May France of Somerset Massachusetts is training to swim the English Channel next month under the guidance of her coach Harry Boudakian and her father John Walter France.
The Amvets Auxiliary hosts a poster contest for children in two divisions, first through fourth grade and fifth grade through junior high, tied to White Clover Day on August 20 in Mt. Vernon. Prizes of 5 dollars go to each division winner. Posters, stressing veterans rehabilitation and the white clover symbol, must be brought August 16 to the Amvets Club Room at 922 Main Street between 4 and 7 pm, and will be displayed at Glassman’s Department Store with winners announced.
A county wide Red Cross safety meeting will be held Friday night July 22 at 8:00 in the circuit court room of the county courthouse. E L Jaies Red Cross First Aid chairman will speak and present movies on safety. All Home Bureau members families and friends invited. No admission charge and the meeting is open to the public.
In a case before Justice of the Peace O E Yandell at Green Hills, the Green Hills Country Club pleaded guilty to possessing slot machines and was fined $100 plus costs. Justice Yandell also ruled Clarence Norsworthy not guilty of possessing gaming devices following a sheriff raid on the club east of Mt Vernon.

Firemen responded at 8:20 last night to a blaze involving a 1940 model car on Fifth street near the Southern depot. The fire started from defective wiring and caused some damage, according to firefighters.

About 26 percent of 43.8 million families earned under 2000 in 1948, down from prior years.

London July 21 Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin condemned Americas unconditional surrender policy for Germany, calling it a shambles to rebuild the German nation. Winston Churchill charged Roosevelt with mentioning the phrase without consulting him, while Bevin said he would not have agreed to it as a cabinet member. Bevin noted he accepted the policy but criticized opposition leaders for leaving a mess.
H Tracy Snelling former information director for the Los Alamos atomic energy project is charged with embezzling Red Cross funds. He disappeared July 13 after handling publicity for the Los Alamos drive and was located in Dallas. A $1960 check from funds campaign bounced as investigators cited June 21 embezzlement timing. Security officers questioned him in Santa Fe and a warrant was served.
