A compendium of residents traveling visiting relatives and attending events from Mt. Vernon area. Mrs Art Mueller and Mrs Martin Hess plan a month in Long Beach to visit Hess's mother. Rotarians and Lions members toured St. Louis area plants and breweries. Numerous locals made trips to Chicago St Louis Pittsburg Philadelphia and Evansville for business visits conventions vacations and funerals.
Miss Eleanor Jane Clark and Vernon F. Huber wed at First Presbyterian Church Yuma at 8:30 p.m. June 19 in a double ring ceremony conducted by Rev. Charles Crawford. The bride, from Mt. Vernon, wore white crepe and lace with a lace veil and carried a white Bible with gladioli and stephanotis. Attendants included Mrs. Kathryn J. Boxley and Miss Frankie Anderson. Best man was Melville F. Huber. ushers were John Simmons and Harry Tate. A reception followed. families wore pastel hues and a three tiered cake graced the table. The couple, both with ties to Mt. Vernon and Wilmington, Del., plan to reside in Wilmington after visiting the Grand Canyon and other sites en route.

Marriage licenses issued for Cody Marcella and Melvin Lowry to Evelyn Welcome.
The southbound Missouri Pacific freight Extra No. 1500 derailed near Valmeyer about 30 miles south of St. Louis. Engineer A. A. McMurray of St. Louis died, his body trapped under the locomotive. Fireman L. C. Epps of Popular Bluff was seriously burned and hospitalized. Brakeman P. J. Brown and Conductor L. L. Rowe were injured. Cause under investigation, with open switch reported as a possible factor.
Three men were critically injured when a plane crashed shortly after takeoff from West Frankfort Illinois airport. The pilot and two passengers Jack Cranor of Waukegan and John G. Robinson of Herrin were among the injured. Blase J. Magnotti, 33, a Corp Illinois bartender, also listed among the hurt.
A continued plan to end the crisis centers on new diplomacy with the Soviet Union amid a surface transport blockade. Officials stress diplomacy first but keep military readiness high, with about 96,000 U.S. troops in Germany, including roughly 24,000 combat troops and 5,000 in Trieste with 3,100 combat personnel.
Three bus loads of Mt. Vernon Lions and Rotarians were met by motorcycle police in St. Louis and escorted through the city. They toured the Fisher Body plant and the Anheuser Busch brewery before plans to attend the Giant Cardinal game were canceled due to rain. Thirty-one Lions and 47 Rotarians participated in the trip.

The body of Pvt. Lloyd Edward Jester who died in France December 16 1944 will arrive in Mt. Vernon Thursday. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 pm at Pulley Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Propst officiating and burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Jester born September 4 1925 was the son of Holly and Ella Jester. He was employed at Hawkins Million Dollar Hen before enlisting December 8 1943 and graduated Mt. Vernon Township High School Class of 1942 at age 16. He trained at Camp Blanding Fort Meade Camp Howie and Fort Bragg and served with the 100th Infantry Division Seventh Army, wearing the Combat Infantryman badge. Survived by parents one brother James and two sisters Catheryn Rueffer Thelma Morrison all of Mt. Vernon. Body will lie in state after 1 pm Thursday at Pulley Funeral Home.
Funeral services for W. HL. Jones a former Wayne county resident who died Thursday at his Evansville Indiana home were held Sunday at Louie's Colonial Chapel The Rev Overton of Evansville conducted the service and burial was at Chandler Indiana He was born in Wayne county son of the late John Jones aged 80 He lived in Evansville 40 years operating a grocery store until retirement two years ago He belonged to the Evansville Methodist church Surviving are his wife Mollie three brothers Morris Jones Evansville Fred Jones this city and Alva Jones Bluford two sisters Mrs Anna Rainwater Bluford and Mrs Bessie Johnson Dinsmore Fla

Robert Burnett heads to California for extended family time. John Howell and family return home to Lebanon after visiting his mother. Ewing Hicks Hunnel and Nora Ewing join Charles Ewing and family of Ellery Fairfield for a Sunday gathering. Vernon Viers of Elgin visits Harry Barker and James Viers families. Nora Irvin and son Ray of Chicago and Bob Irvin of St Louis spend Sunday with locals.
Springerton HL July 21. The high school was abolished by the education board. Principal Charles Tr. Rodgers said he accepted a similar post at New Haven, Ill. The village loses its high school for the first time since 1913. Former pupils will attend Enfield or Mill Shoals high schools. The school had 15 pupils last term.

A Salina Kansas dispatch reports a heavy stockpile of army equipment readied for shipment from Camp Phillips to England. Gun carriages, command cars, ambulances and other vehicles were loaded on 240 flat cars, with uniforms and blankets in box cars. Washington officials questioned the size, noting it seems larger than typical replacement stocks. The movement was said to be directed by Smoky Hill Air Force Base officials, though an Air Force spokesman denied it was an Air Force shipment.
Chicago July 21 Illinois Republicans will reconvene their state convention in Springfield August 19 to adopt a state platform deferred after the National Convention. The state convention opened in May.
Lawrence Collins of Illinois Bell announces new hours for the Mt Vernon business office. The office will close after 12 noon on Saturdays while weekday hours remain eight in the morning to 9 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
