Rites Saturday For Rosa Tucker

Funeral services for Rosa Tucker, 88, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in Myers Chapel with Rev. Whittington presiding. Burial follows in Smith cemetery. The body lies in state at the funeral home after 4:00 p.m. Friday. She died Wednesday in Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Born November 12, 187?, in Spring Garden, she was the daughter of William Granvel and Harriet Puckett. Dirksen Percy Centralia Office to Open July 23

Southern Illinois residents will gather in Centralia on Sunday July 23 for the opening of the Dirksen Percy downstate offices. The event starts at 4 PM at 333 East Broadway with Senators Dirksen and Percy and other party dignitaries present. Two fundraising events accompany the grand opening a luncheon and a dinner at Meadow Wood Country Club.

McNaughton Former Pekin Times Editor Killed in Plane Crash

John McNaughton, recently confirmed secretary of the Navy, was editor of the Pekin Times from 1951 to 1953 and a Pekin columnist from 1949 to 1962. Born in Bicknell Indiana, he graduated from Pekin High School and DePauw University, and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1948. He died in a North Carolina plane crash at age 46, having been set to assume Navy duties on August 1.

Two rural residents reported thefts to Jefferson county Sheriff Bob Ruddick. Nellie Tindle of Route 4 said a television antenna a bird cage an antique pickle cracker and a picnic set were stolen from the Davis Highway home southeast of Mt. Vernon. Delbert Clifton reported items taken from his home northeast of Opdyke after it was left unlocked during a trip to the Mt. Vernon State Fair. Deputies said 18 gallons of gasoline were also taken from a pump at the Clifton residence along with cigarettes a coin bank detergent and other household items.

Grant Permit For Gas Station At Interchange

A permit for construction of a Sinclair service station at the Interstate 57 64 interchange west of Mt Vernon was granted at city hall yesterday to Sinclair Refining Company. The $40,000 project will sit on the north side of U S Route 460 and east of the superhighway. No permit fee was charged since the site lies beyond the city limits.

Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce began exploring 3,500 square feet of office space for a district petroleum company office. Realtors and building owners were asked to contact the chamber if space is available. The prospect, seeking information on population, air service, taxes, and Welcome Wagon services, would employ 20 to 25 people at salaries of 10 000 to 12 000 dollars annually.

Drowns In Wabash At New Harmony

An Evansville youth drowned while swimming the Wabash River from Illinois to Indiana near New Harmony. Companions said Larry Spale disappeared halfway across as he tried to return. Civil Defense workers recovered his body three hours later from White County, Illinois.
