More than 200 city employees including police and firemen dropped strike plans after accepting a 5 percent wage increase offer. Two 17 year old Tulsa boys completed a 12 foot home made rocket begun in 1954. Bradley Glover spent about 250 hours researching rockets and aerodynamics before drafting plans. In Harlan Kentucky federal state and local officers launched a major moonshine raid the like of which has not occurred there before. Researchers Say Some Cigarette Filters Contain Nicotine
Dr. Ernest L. Wynder testified before a House subcommittee that some tobacco companies market filtered cigarettes with tar and nicotine levels similar to or higher than unfiltered ones. He urged that a safer cigarette is possible with effective filtering and proper tobacco blends, but warned many filters are ineffective. Wynder warned about the toll of lung cancer, estimating 25,000 deaths this year and that at least 80 percent could have been prevented if people did not smoke.
