The Kefauver Senate Investigating Committee arrives in Kansas City for a two day probe into national crime conditions. Chairman Kefauver cites St Louis as a center of interstate bookmaking while noting its local police are diligent. He questions Fairmont City Police Chief John Vickery over the Melba Corporation bookmaking operation near the police station.
Jefferson Memorial admitted Mrs. Donna Walker Alfred Leffler and infant Leta Rose Quarterman of Texico. Discharged were Mrs. Sylvia Woods of Bluford Mrs. Bessie Scott Mr. Robert Oakes of Keenes Ray Ashby. Good Samaritan discharged Mrs. Doris Brown Mrs. Mary Margaret Pulliam Mrs. Hattie Harper Mr Myrtle Marie Nelson of Fairfield Miss Jolie Farthing of Bonnie.
Kathryn Warner and Ray Severs of Vernon were married Friday evening June 30 by Rev. George H. Shelton at his home. Attendants were Miss Frieda Minor and Orval Chapman. The couple will reside at 718 East Main Street.
James Henneberry of Mt. Vernon has been named to the student council of St Ambrose College in Davenport Iowa. He is recovering at home from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mr. and Mrs. Loren Allen of Olney are the parents of a 9 pound boy born yesterday at Webber Hospital. Mrs. Allen is the former Doris Trout, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Trout of this city.
Thomas N. Liggett aged 61 of Detroit was killed and Walter Schible aged 22 of Detroit injured seriously in an auto crash last night in Metropolis Illinois, according to Associated Press reports.
Norman B. McGrew of Des Moines and Myra Colleen Fox of Ashley Road obtained a marriage license. The simple filing reflects a union planned in the area, with both parties listed as applicants in the official records.
The Elizabeth Circle of First Presbyterian Church hosted a Galloping Breakfast at Mrs. Walter Schroeder's home on Wednesday morning. About 15 members attended for fruit, coffee, and hot rolls before a white elephant auction. Assistant hostesses were Grace Anthony, Mary Ragan, and Agnes Donham.
The Patton Commandery cancels its potluck supper planned for Thursday evening July 20 because the crippled children's clinic is being held in the Masonic Temple, prompting the event’s cancellation.
The training union department of East Side Baptist Church will hold a fellowship meeting Thursday evening July 20 at 7 30 at the city park with entertainment and refreshments. Members are urged to attend and bring guests.
The Van Dorn Unit of Home Bureau met Monday evening July 17 at Mrs. Flossie Mcfaughlin's home. After a brief business session led by Mrs. Myrtle Bechtel a new member joined. Fifteen members and two Woodlawn guests attended as games and contests followed refreshments of ice cream and cake. The next gathering is a picnic at the city park on August 21.
Mrs. Mollie Duffy 76 of Edwardsville Ill., sister of G M McNew Mt Vernon and Mrs. Robert R. Lewis of Mt Vernon, died after hip and arm fractures. Funeral services and burial set for Edwardsville Friday after a period as patient at Alton hospital.
A tank exploded at the Shell refinery in Roxana killing Kenneth FE Doty of Belleville and injuring Alvis Dilback of Alton. Dilback, a welder, was brazing a bracket when a spark ignited vapors. Doty, a pipe fitter, was blown from the tank.
Mt Vernon park police warn boys to stop using slingshots on park squirrels after complaints. Anyone caught shooting in the park will be arrested to stop the activity.
President proposes no limit on army size with expanded National Guard call ups. He urges Congress to authorize defense materials priority, tax increases, tighter credit, and production loan guarantees to boost defense output. He warns Korea offers no quick victory and pledges renewed mobilization to defend peace, urging readiness and international support, while critiquing Soviet omissions in the United Nations.
Lorene Troutman of RFD 4 Mt Vernon suffered minor injuries in a two car collision on state route 37 at 10:00 last night. She was treated at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital and released. Drivers were Mae Hank of Aden II and Jim Troutman of RFD 4 Mt Vernon.
Mrs LeRoy Nichols filed for divorce in Paterson New Jersey alleging cruelty by her husband. She charged he sat her on his lap embraced her and prevented her from doing her housework as grounds for the complaint filed yesterday.

ROCK ISLAND Ill July 19 The sale of sanitarium property near Colorado Springs Colorado to Blevins Davis a theatrical producer was announced by the Modern Woodmen of America President Henry F Turner said the agreement covered the sale and that the price would not be announced He did not know what use Davis intends for the sanitarium The institution served tuberculous members for 40 years from 1907 to 1947 when it closed due to too few patients
Navy pilots off the east coast of Korea strafed air fields near Pyongyang and knocked out five to eight planes believed to be dummies, also hitting a hangar, locomotive, and rail marshalling yard. A second carrier group hit Wonsan harbor, destroying five small crafts and strafing nearby railroad installations.
In Nashville Illinois on July 19 Capt Ambrose Nugent 41 a Merrill Wisconsin native was reported missing in Korean action. Nugent was alleged by Communists to have broadcast anti US propaganda over Seoul radio. His wife Olga 29 German war bride said she had received an army telegram confirming his disappearance. He served with the 24th Division. Meanwhile the wife, who had sought citizenship hearings in St Louis, noted she received citizenship papers by mail yesterday.
Edward E. Curtis president of the Security Bank of Mt. Vernon is enrolled in the Freshman class of the Bankers School of Public Relations organized by the New York State Bankers Association with Syracuse University. Sessions run on the Syracuse campus the week of July 24. About 140 students attend. Curtis graduated in 1948 from the Central States School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.
Washington July 19 One Illinois soldier was wounded and another missing in the Korean fighting, in the Defense Department's 28th casualty list. Pvt Roy A Zimerman of East St Louis was wounded and 1st Lieut John A Fox of Shawneetown was missing.
Washington July 19 The Pentagon posted warnings in red and black letters urging restraint on discussing classified material in reception rooms and public places labeling such talk dangerous and inappropriate.
Southern Illinois University will offer two extension courses in Mt. Vernon this fall as announced by county superintendent Sidney S. Hirons. Education 355 Philosophy of Education taught by Willis Malone and English 391 Usage in Spoken and Written English with Henry L. Wilson will run 16 weeks, meeting Mondays at 7:00 PM at Mt. Vernon High School for two and one-half hours per session and provide four quarter hours or about two and two-thirds semester hours of credit.
Fox Theatres owners and managers from southern Illinois gathered in Mt Vernon for a special screening of Broken Arrow starring Jimmy Stewart. The event, led by Gordon Halloran of 20th Century Fox, drew about 35 exhibitors from the region. The film portrays American Indian life in a nonwarlike light and will run in Mt Vernon during the third week of August.
Funeral services for Ed Burkett 77 of Keenes will be held Thursday at 2 00 pm at the Keenes Christian church. The Rev John Samford will officiate and burial will be in Garrison Temple cemetery. The body will remain at Combs Chapel in Wayne City until 10 am Thursday then will be removed to the family home in Keenes. Mr Burkett a retired farmer died at 6 00 am yesterday at his home in Keenes. He was born April 21 1873 near Xenia Illinois the son of John and Emaline King Burkett. He was married to Margaret Wood who survives. Mr Burkett was a member of Garrison Temple Methodist church. Besides his wife he is survived by a sister Mrs Nellie Henson of Xenia four stepdaughters Mrs Edgar Fleming and Mrs Minnie Wilson of Keenes Mrs Earl Gregory of Tulsa Oklahoma and Mrs Jake Leonard of Hillsboro Missouri and a stepson Guy Wood of St Louis.
