Jo Walker comes back from Canada after two weeks away. Across Illinois and nearby states, families return from visits with relatives in Mt. Vernon Decatur and Marion. Several attend the funeral of Mrs. Clara Roll in this city and others travel for weddings, vacations, and business.
Hospital notes list admissions at Jefferson Memorial including Mrs. Claire Peiffer of Chicago and several others with infants. Discharged patients include Bill Groves and several women with newborns. Also Good Samaritan notes multiple admissions and discharges across names and infants.
The Evening Unit of the Home Bureau meets at Mrs. Harley Turner’s home at 512 south 22nd street at 7 30 p m Tuesday with major and minor lessons by local leaders. Newcomers Club gathers at Mt Vernon city park for a watermelon feast at seven. The Young Married People’s Class of Second Baptist meets at Mt Vernon city park July 20 at 6 30 p m for a chicken fry. West Salem WSC of the West Salem church meets at Celestine Bullock’s home July 21 at 2 p m with program by Mary Herman Inez Quinn and Gladys Ward. co hosts Ruth Thomas and Edith Carter. Visitors welcome.

Born August 14 1873 Hunts Station Livingston Co NY. Came to Mt Vernon from Fairfield in 1937 and lived here since. Survived by five sons Clifton Sherwood Orville Washington Elmo Pasco Craig Kennewick. Wife preceded him in death.
Ward McHee and his wife Pauline of Davis Illinois sustained minor injuries when their car collided with a vehicle driven by Julius Karcher of Dahlgren at a road blockade east of Dahlgren around 8 30 Saturday night. They were transported to Vickers Memorial Hospital for treatment and released today.

C. L. Garrison of Marion Indiana visited relatives after flying here Sunday. M. W. Mitchell of Champaign Illinois stopped at the field yesterday. J. Marikos made a cross country landing from Urbana yesterday. Gerald Smith and Amos Reynolds flew to Salem and Nashville today. Roger Saums completed a cross country flight to St. Louis Missouri today.

Free for All Pace winner Russell Rose on Howard Hanover owned by Walter Rhodes of Mt. Vernon led in three heats with rapid times 2:09 2:05 and 2:10. Frisco Abbe owned by Don Hayes of Du Quain took Trot heat in 2:14, last two won by Hector Mite of Marion driven by E. Norman in 2:10 and 2:11. Grattan Truax swept three pace heats in 2:11 2:14 and 2:14. Bellehelma won the half mile and Lady Keen claimed the mile race with Loud Crasher second.
J P Court Moss Riddle pleaded guilty to reckless driving before Justice of the Peace O K Yandell, fined 50 dollars and costs. Deputy Sheriff Russell Dalby arrested him Saturday on route 15. Jack Laird posted a peace bond of 500 dollars before Justice of the Peace O E Yandell for one year.
E L James reports 36 people treated at the Red Cross first aid booth during the Mt. Vernon State Fair last week. Volunteer workers named include Mr and Mrs Carlos Young Mrs Florence Armstrong Mr and Mrs E L James Mrs Myrtle St Clair Mrs Mildred Wood Mrs Mable Smith Mrs Grace Buchanan Mr and Mrs Owen Rainwater plus Donald Hahn Lawrence Taliana Kay Fleerage and Mrs Clara Clark. James thanks Burrell Davis Mrs Paul Whitney Myers Funeral Service and the Mt. Vernon State Fair Association for cooperation and states the chapter will set up a First Aid booth at public gatherings upon request.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today for Mrs. Marinda Dykes who died Saturday morning at her home on Jefferson Street. She was first married to George Riley in 1885, who died in 1896, later to W. G. Dykes who died in 1943. Three children also preceded her in death.
