Abducted Man Shot Dead Near De Soto Illinois
Paul Rains, 29, of Murphysboro, was abducted from a trailer home near De Soto by two men who bound two women present. Rains was found later in a wooded area with shotgun wounds to the head and shoulder. The Jackson County sheriff and state police investigated but reported no new leads. Reward expires for Colleen Battaglia case in Carbondale
A $5,000 reward offered July 13 by about 150 businessmen and citizens for information on the July 9 slaying of Southern Illinois University student Colleen Battaglia, 22, expires at midnight with little help. Attorney James Morris said the goal was quick results. Police report only one or two calls, none fruitful. Battaglia, formerly of Fall River, Massachusetts, was found bound and shot in the luggage space of her car at a dump.

Man Found Shot On SIU Edwardsville Campus
An unidentified man in his mid 30s was found shot to death beside Bluff Road near Interstate 270 at the edge of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus. Ashley Girl Hurt In Wreck Near Ashley
A 15 year old girl named Kitty Melton was injured when a car carrying her and her mother Geraldina Melton was forced off U S Route 51 three miles north of Ashley. Kitty was at Washington County Hospital for back injury X rays while Geraldina reported another car passed and caused the crash.
