A flurry of weekend visits and hometown travel lights up Mt Vernon as residents and relatives from Bluford Norris City Peoria Decatur and Chicago converge for reunions and familial duties. Families including Lowery Holabeck Smith and Stout keep ties strong while others attend funerals and hospital updates across the region.

The marriage was disclosed today between Miss Marjorie Simpson daughter of Mrs M Simpson of the city and Robert D McGuire of Mt Vernon. The ring ceremony occurred May 14 at the Baptist parsonage in Morganfield Kentucky. They will reside in the city where McGuire works at Mt Vernon Foundry Division. After a two week wedding trip to Florida they will be home at 1707 South Tenth Street.
Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced he would steer Britain through the economic crisis while Chancellor Sir Stafford Cripps is on sick leave. Cripps plans to depart for Switzerland tomorrow for treatment of colitis as Attlee assumes the duties in the Commons.
The rural fire department issued a call for volunteer firemen. Interested persons should report to the rural fire station at 806 S. 17th Street for an interview with Chief Carl Jones today, Tuesday or Wednesday. Volunteers will be used only in emergencies.
Mt. Vernon U.S.E.S. office reported 157 initial and 683 continued unemployment claims for the week ending July 15 totaling 1194 weeks, announced today by deputy in charge Owen D. Herbert Jr.
A motor bike was stolen last night from a parking area in front of the Stadium Theatre on South Ninth Street. Police report the owner as Donald Faharhodz of Salem Road.
Mrs Rosa Anderson of 2008 Perkins received a Westinghouse refrigerator Saturday night from the Mt Vernon Junior Woman's Club at the Mt Vernon Fair Grounds.
The Illinois Service Recognition Board mailed 100 soldier bonus checks totaling 29,945 dollars. The board has sent 437,399 checks to Cook county veterans and 423,699 to ex servicemen downstate, with a total valuation of 312,058,196 dollars.
Jefferson County Chapter of the American Cancer Society outlines a winter and spring program with a public display at Mt. Vernon State Fair. An illuminated figure shows cancer danger areas while volunteers share literature and answer questions. A committee for education and orientation is being organized to provide vital facts and prevention guidance to the public.

Mr and Mrs Emery Vernon Frazier of Wayne City welcomed a daughter at Good Samaritan Hospital Sunday morning. A son for Mr and Mrs Eugene Matthews of Fairfield born at Good Samaritan Sunday morning. Dennis Harold is the name. Clyde Compton and wife of Camp Ground welcomed a son at Jefferson Memorial Hospital Sunday at 10 am weighing eight pounds 15 ounces named Ronald Glen. Woodrow Pigg and wife of 128 Catleton had a daughter at Jefferson Memorial Hospital Sunday at 3 15 am weighing five pounds 11 ounces. Gale R Pasley and wife welcomed a daughter at Jefferson Memorial Hospital Sunday at 3 59 pm weighing five pounds 14 ounces named Terry Lynn. James O Hart and wife of McLeansboro had a son born at Jefferson Memorial Hospital today at noon weighing eight pounds 10 ounces.
A total of 92 emergency cases were cared for at the Red Cross First Aid tent during the Mt Ver non State Fair. Injuries were mainly minor cuts and fatigue. Two dogs bit attendees amid wet conditions. Volunteer workers at the first aid station included Jack Cormany Enuna bre meister Mary Louise Witter and many others.
Three minor fires occurred in Mt Vernon over the weekend. At 12:20 a.m. Sunday Willard Brewer, 104 Neen Street, had a fire caused by defective electrical wiring with slight damage. An automobile at 14th and Harrison caught fire from wiring. Joe Frank Allen used a fire extinguisher to control it, damage was slight. At 8:45 p.m. last night Frank Kinison, 407 S Seventh Street, had wiring fire that lit clothes and a wall in a clothes closet. damage was not heavy.
Mrs Elfrida M Rainey of 517 Herbert street died at 845 p m Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital aged 84 years six months and 13 days Funeral services 200 pm at Myers Chapel with Rev T E Harper officiating and burial in Oakwood cemetery She was born January 4 1868 in Jefferson county daughter of Noah H and wife a Mt Vernon resident 43 years Surviving three sons Clarence Claude of Mt Vernon Ros of San Francisco Calif three daughters Myrtle Tuitt Louis Lillie Clark and Iva King six grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren One son Homer preceding her in death
An automobile owned by Burrell Moore of 120 N Sixth Street was heavily damaged by fire on Lebanon Road about two and a half miles southeast of Mt. Vernon last night. Rural firemen were called to the scene.
Mrs Tillie Annie Meek 58 died Sunday afternoon at her son's Mt Vernon home after seven months of ill health. Daughter of Henry and Selma Schilling, she married Edward Meek in 1916. he preceded her. She lived in Centralia most of life, moved to Mt Vernon last January. Survived by two sons Edward and Luther, sister and brother names, and one grandchild. Funeral Wednesday 2 pm in Tralia.
Donald G. Geary, area rent representative, will not be in Mt. Vernon on Thursday, July 21, as scheduled. The rent office here will be open next Monday, July 25, from 9 to 12 a.m. and Thursday, July 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the council room of city hall.
County Judge Frank H. Walker ruled Oscar Russell not guilty of leaving the scene of an accident in a matter filed in September 1947. Russell pleaded innocent after a trial held May 9 and 10, with the judge taking the case under advisement.
The body of Lt Henry J French a McLeansboro pilot killed in a jet crash near Denton Texas arrives at noon in McLeansboro. The 21 year old engaged to be married in September had been stationed at Selfridge Field since last November. Funeral services will be held at Kashkonong Missouri at 2 00 p m Wednesday after a two day wake at 601 South Locust McLeansboro. His father H C French works for Kingwood Oil.
