Rachel Adeline Gannaway died at 4 40 pm Wednesday at 822 Taylor. She was 84 years old. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday at Myers Chapel with Dr Don Crocker officiating. Burial in Oakwood cemetery. She was born January 17 1881 in Jefferson county. Survived by husband Paul Ninde Gannaway, daughter Harriette Kern, grandson Paul Kern, nephew William S Price and nieces Katherine Young and Mrs George Sinks. Member of First Methodist church.

Viet Cong guerrillas killed two Americans and at least two South Vietnamese troops in an hour long mortar attack on a government command post 35 miles north of Saigon. A relief force found the bodies and at least 20 wounded. Five armored personnel carriers lay wrecked. The Pentagon outlined plans to expand U S military presence in South Vietnam to 179000 forces. Officials said demobilization of ships and chartering others could aid Southeast Asia supply needs. The Army awarded a 50 million dollar contract for 720 Iroquois helicopters as part of modernization. Draft officials asserted readiness to deliver enlistments in early months of any mobilization. McNamara said reserve and guard merger would proceed despite mobilization, maintaining combat readiness.
