Walla Walla Washington July 15 Death on the gallows ended the bloody wanderings of Jake Bird a 48 year old Negro transient who confessed knowledge of 44 murders He was hanged for the ax murder of Mrs Bertha Kludt in Tacoma on Oct 30 1947 Bird carried his case through multiple courts prompting the US Supreme Court to reject his appeal for the third time His confessions aided investigations that linked him to killings across Iowa Colorado Utah Indiana Illinois Nebraska and Washington including the Mt Vernon Bertha Dale case He reportedly pronounced a hex on several men involved in his trial and six of those men later died.
