Death of Russell Mays Rural Mail Carrier at 54
Russell H Mays 54 of 810 North street died after a heart attack while driving on his mail route north of town. He stopped the car before wrecking it and died at Good Samaritan Hospital. A painter who created murals for 20 southern Illinois churches he will be buried in Memorial Gardens after services at Myers Chapel Tuesday at 2:00 pm. He was born December 25 1914 in Scheller. Survived by Olive his wife, parents, son Russell Wayne and three daughters, plus brothers sisters and several step relatives.

Richard Clark's Mother Dies in Christopher
Mrs. Matti Lee Clark, 73, of Christopher, died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital. She resided at Hickory Grove Manor Nursing Home and will lie in state at Gilbert Funeral Home. Visitation begins Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. Survivors include husband Avery Clark, son Richard Clark of Mt. Vernon, daughters Mary Clark Faye Livingston and Ann Eickelman, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Three Auto Accidents Reported By City Police
City police reported three automobile accidents Saturday. At 12 15 p m a collision in the Amvets parking lot involved Marvin Baker 17 of Liberty Road and Betty Rasche Hazelwood Missouri with Rasche suffering minor damage and Baker's car lightly damaged. No arrests. At 12 42 p m two cars collided on the 100 block of North 9th Street backers from a parking space were Mary Rainey 21 706 South 25th Street and Ronald Wilson 24 York Road Wilson was arrested for backing without due caution. Rainey’s car damaged over 100 Wilson’s car undetermined. At 6 30 p m a motorcycle driven by Russell Horn Marion collided with Carl E Hearn 2020 Broadway at 10th Street and Conger Avenue. Hearn’s car damaged $75 with no damage estimate for the motorcycle.

Two Men Drown Trying to Save Girl in Illinois River
In La Salle Illinois two men drowned while attempting a rescue of Judy Carne a 16 year old girl who was struggling in the Illinois River starved rock state park. Edward Dutson of Chicago was identified as among the victims with the other man unnamed. Two bystanders in a boat pulled Carne from the water and the men were swept away by the current.
