Mt Vernon hosts Franklin School Open House with visitors from Belleville Belle Rive Belleville Belle Rive and other towns. Local officials Hiram Adams J D Hails Keith Dutton C J Anslinger and many residents attend while out of town guests from Texas Ohio New York and New Jersey are noted among attendees.
The Bethel Neighborhood club met at the club center on Wednesday for a covered dish luncheon followed by a short business meeting and contests won by Lena Baker Louise Breeze and Maude Clayborne A reading Vacation Time was given by Louise Breeze.
The Woodlawn Unit of Jefferson County Home Bureau met Wednesday at 7:30 p m at Mrs Charles Compton's 2425 College Ave. 16 members plus one new member Rosetta Riley attended with three guests. A July 25 special meeting at the Woodlawn Christian church will feature 4 H girls displaying clothing and cooking projects.
The United States Britain and France urged Russia to allow an impartial international body to check on thousands of German war prisoners known to have been in Soviet custody. The Western powers delivered notes to the Soviet foreign office in Moscow amid accusations that Russia lied about holding only 13 546 German prisoners while alleging hundreds of thousands remain unaccounted for.
Two blasts, a quarter hour apart, rocked the Gosport naval ammunition center near Portsmouth injuring no one reported. Fire spread from a lighter to the depot as brigades from nearby towns rushed to the scene in Britain’s famed yacht building port.

Camp Ground Home Bureau Unit schedules a party for August 17 at the city park cabin for 4 H boys and girls and their parents. A textile painting lesson is set for August 8 at Mrs Agnes Denhams home with a covered dish luncheon. Veneta Shull spoke as county vice chair. Marie Faulkner taught Symptoms of Disease. Myrtle St Clair led recreation in the absence of Marjorie Williams. Afterward hostess Mrs Mildred Rainwater served refreshments to 15 members one new member Mrs Ann Harrell and five guests Mrs Veneta Shull Mrs Nellie Atkinson Mrs Bertha Harvey Mrs Pauline Marlow and Mrs P A Gowler.
The Marlow Sunshine Club will meet on Wednesday July 19 with Mrs. Carolee Randall to host. Members are asked to bring tea towels for the hostess.
SAN DIEGO Calif July 14 Marines of the Fifth Regiment veterans of World War I are set to sail for the Korean war zone. They embarked aboard the transport Henrico yesterday as the first Marine Division completed loading. Two other transports stand by to take more troops while at the Naval Air Station the escort carrier Badoeng Strait finishes loading planes of the First Marine Air Wing from El Toro Calif. All ships will form a convoy before heading for the Orient.
Santa Monica marked its 75th birthday with the world’s largest square dance attracting about 50,000 spectators. Eight thousand costumed dancers, 36 callers, and a newly laid pavement floor on Wilshire Boulevard and Ocean Avenue filled parkways and sidewalks as de si do and partner swings echoed through the event.
British doctors threaten to quit National Health Service unless general practitioners pay increases. Britain guarantees free medical care and about 60,000 doctors exist, with roughly 19,000 in the NHS. Local committees plan December talks to decide on the threat.
An aircraft machinist named Nicholas Dittlinger reported Siamese Twins flying saucers skimmed St. Louis rooftops late Wednesday night. Police Lt. Lohrum and Dittlinger's brother corroborated the sighting noting silvery silent objects about 12 to 15 feet across and illuminated.
Leslie Musto, 47, was sentenced to 60 days in Cattaraugus County Jail for stealing a case of corned beef. His first jail meal was corned beef.
Washington July 14 An Army spokesman said American troops in Korea are not being slaughtered and there is no Dunkerque in sight. He cited daily casualty figures and noted one killed, 20 wounded, none missing in 24 hours, plus 14 non battle casualties. He said the war is defensive and time is required to build an offensive. He recalled past withdrawals and warned against catastrophe but affirmed resolve to hold and push back. The briefing also covered North Korean raids and MacArthur’s turnover of Korea duties to diplomatic officials.

Leroy Jannsen 24 of St. Louis escaped with a bruised elbow after his truck overturned in a collision at 22nd and Broadway. Two trucks were involved. G M Leeck of 801 South 22nd street drove the other, who was unhurt. The crash left Jannsen's vehicle on its side before a wrecker righted it and removed it from the scene.
Allied warplanes pounded invader ground forces as Far East Air Force reported nine enemy tanks destroyed and 58 damaged, while 12 trucks were wrecked and 45 damaged. U S B 29 strikes focused on Wonsan, with nearly 50 Superforts bombarding the port. Pyongyang accused indiscriminate bombing causing hospital and school casualties. MacArthur noted little change along central front as eastern Korean forces, veterans of Manchuria fighting Chinese Nationalists, launched heavy attacks before stabilizing the line. one Reds company, possibly 100 plus men, broke through southern lines but was annihilated.

U N Secretary General Trygve Lie appealed to 52 UN members to provide ground forces and other aid for the Korea war effort. He dispatched telegrams urging consideration of combat support, especially ground troops, while noting the need for effective forces and cautioning against token troops. No comment on atomic weapons was given.
Miss Voris Draper an 18 year old resident of Wayne City was injured in an automobile accident near Sims last night around 11 o clock. She received treatment for cuts to her head and back at Jefferson Memorial Hospital and was released. Melvin McCord 17 of Keenes also injured with a minor shoulder injury. Nina Rainwater of Wayne City was unhurt.
Jefferson county officers report a youth was bitten by a squirrel late yesterday and the animal later died. Sheriff J. Chris Johnson took the squirrel to the state laboratory at Carbondale Illinois for analysis to determine rabies.
Mr and Mrs Max Waters of 512 South 17th Street welcomed a girl born at 4 30 PM at Jefferson Memorial Hospital weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces. A girl, 4 pounds 15 ounces, was born last night at the same hospital to Mr and Mrs Lewis G Sheraden of Mill Shoals. Mr and Mrs Irvin Boles of Sterling Illinois are the parents of a 9 pound 5 ounce son born July 9. Mrs Boles was Dorothy Maxwell of Waltonville. Mr and Mrs Alfred William Miller of 905 South 22nd Street became parents of a girl, Marilyn, this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Lester P. Moore of 1704 south 15th street died at 3 40 pm at Marion Veterans Hospital after seven weeks illness. A World War I veteran and carpenter, he leaves wife Nora Bethel and children Charles Pilly James Samuel Mildred, two sisters and a brother. Funeral Saturday at 2 00 pm Church of Christ 24th and Cherry with burial in Bethel Memorial cemetery. Burial details by W F W.
Henry Schwarz of Belleville newly elected senior vice commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Dept of Minnis will be at Mt Vernon State Fair to assist the United Veterans League recruitment service. Other order members from Belleville and East St Louis will be present under the grandstand. James Wagner begins solo study at the local field while Harold Hollet from Mt. Vernon earns his private pilot license today. Also flying in are R. A. Lazoie and Walter Bohn of Gillman III, on the field this day.
Funeral services for Mrs Mollie Crosnoe 85 will be held Saturday at d1 a.m. at Myers Chapel with Rev Riley Burton officiating. Burial follows in Oakwood cemetery. The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel and friends may call. She died at 3 00 a.m. yesterday at her son Fart Crosnoe’s home 815 South 21st Street.
