Funeral services were held near St. Louis for Patricia Pattie Merritt 17 granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Alva O Merritt of Mt Vernon. She and her fiancé Bill Fizer of Overland Missouri drowned while swimming in Big River near Cedar Hill Missouri. Joint services were held for the drowning victims. Merritt had visited Mt Vernon several times with her grandparents. Her father Jack Merritt died over three years ago. Authorities said Fizer attempted a rescue but both could not reach the river bank.

F. cemetery at Woodlawn. The body lies in state at Pulley Funeral Home after 4:00 p.m. today. Mrs. Howe died Wednesday morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. Born April 12, 1891 in Jefferson county, she was the daughter of Isaac and Betsy Wood. She married Richard Howe December 27, 1910 in Mt. Vernon, who died August 24, 1950. Surviving are three daughters Helen Lang of Charlottesville Virginia, Thelma Barbatoe of New Orleans Louisiana, and Betty Harrison of Mt. Vernon, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
