Traffic was heavy in Mti Vernon yesterday due to fair activity, but only one minor collision was reported to police. The sedan driver was Paul Lowery of Ankakee Illinois and Archie Fairchild of 1404 South Tenth Street drove a pickup. the 1400 block of Tenth was involved. No injuries were reported.

Three Rural Grass Fires End Without Damage
Mt Vernon rural firemen battled three grass fires yesterday afternoon. At 3:49 p.m. a blaze along a fence at the Fairgrounds endangered two parked trucks but caused no damage. At 4:06 p.m. a fire at D A Borah’s Ashley Road home did no damage. At 5:33 p.m. another grass fire burned along U S Highway 460 a mile southeast of Mt Vernon.

In Freeburg Illinois neighbors discovered Elmer Mueth aged 44 and his 12-year-old son Donald shot to death in their residence. A 122 caliber rifle lay beside the father. Sheriff deputies identified the victims. a physician estimated they had been dead about two days. Mueth and his wife Stella 31 were divorced and daughter Mary Ann 14 resided with Mrs Mueth in Belleville.
