She was born July 10 1894 in Jefferson County daughter of Joseph P Wells and Elizabeth Hayes. United Mine Workers Local 1148 members walked off Tuesday at Peabody Coal Co in Freeburg Illinois prompting the plant closure. About 380 miners in a feeding mine would be affected by the stoppage as talks planned to address bids for jobs at Randolph plant in New Athens. Grant to train workers linked to Mt Vernon plan

The Mt Vernon Commission approved a 12500 grant to support a planning project run by GERPDC and Mt Vernon Industrial Development Commission to recruit and train workers for General Tire and the local medical center. The panel also set a 370524.39 operating budget for next year and approved adding 4000 to Drug Abuse Education and raising criminal justice planning funds to 58145.39. Zlochower resigned as Criminal Justice Training Coordinator effective July 31, with Moreno recruiting a replacement. a regional water supply coordination committee was named including Mt Vernon and other area entities. A November conference on strip mine reclamation was authorized.

Four Wrecks At Intersection In Mt Vernon Area

At the intersection of 10th Street and Fisher's Lane, Mt. Vernon, four traffic accidents occurred within 24 hours. Irma L. Igo and Anna F. Holloway collided at 2:51 p.m., Igo’s car then backing into Draper’s car and into Mt. Vernon Auto Parts. A driverless car was involved, causing property damage. Igo was charged with failure to yield right of way. Early morning collisions at 7:02 a.m. damaged McQuaide and Howell. Minutes later Randall and Gregory collided. Randall charged with following too close.

Argo Firm Gets I-64 Sign Contract In Illinois

The National Advertising Co of Argo won a 207 602 dollar contract to supply and install traffic signs along 48 miles of I 64 from Route 460 south east of Mt. Vernon to the Wabash River near Grayville. Work covers Jefferson Wayne and White counties and includes signage along the highway.

Kidnapper charged as search narrows in Illinois case

Hunt suspect faces nine charges including rape and aggravated battery in a Sunday incident. Investigation continues into a lake case with no charges yet. The manhunt spanned river bottoms along the Big Muddy in south central Illinois with state, local and federal officers. Michael Battaglia told police he last saw his wife alive at noon Monday as he bicycled to class and met her driving their 1972 two door Chevrolet Nova near campus. Authorities speculated gunmen forced their way into the car later. the bank holdup in Elkville occurred about 1 p.m. Three hours after the holdup, the nude body was found in the trunk at the landfill. Mrs Battaglia, an A student, was to begin a master’s program in rehabilitation of handicapped people. Her husband was pursuing a master’s degree in engineering.
