Cable Severed Cuts Phone Service in Mt Vernon
Telephone service was disrupted for nine hours yesterday afternoon and last night to about 300 homes in Mt Vernon’s southwest section. A trenching machine used by Illinois Water Co. cut a 600 pair telephone cable, quickly repaired by the Bell system. Al Berg, manager, said the water company bore no blame as blueprints were a few inches off, causing the mishap.

Fifty-four arrests were recorded by Mt. Vernon police in June per Officer Andy Webb. Fines totaled 947 dollars. Drunk cases numbered nineteen, disturbances eleven, traffic violations fifteen including three reckless and drunken driving, speeding, illegal parking, no muffler, hit and run, and liquor transport with broken seal. Nora L. Cowger dies at 71 in Mt. Vernon
Nora L. Cowger of Mt. Vernon aged 71 died at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after a week’s illness. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2:00 pm at Lebanon Baptist Church with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. She was born June 19, 1881 in Tamarea Illinois to Ezekiel and Anna Thompson. She married Walter J. Cowger in 1907, who preceded her in 1934. Survived by son Harry A. Cowger and daughters Katharine Medders and Dorothy Kelley, a brother Charles Thompson, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
