A long stream of Mt. Vernon and area residents are noted visiting relatives, attending events, or traveling to St. Louis, Chicago, Marion, Vincennes and other cities. The item lists dozens of individuals and families, plus hospitalizations and travel to hospitals. Included are Ted Whitacre heading to Chanute Field for three months training and others visiting, staying with relatives, or returning from trips.
Amvet Auxiliary holds its regular monthly gathering at 8 o'clock in the club room with plans to discuss forthcoming events. Guest Mrs. Juanita Fenoli, wife of Major John R. Fenoli, will display linens and dishes from Japan and the Philippine Islands. Shiloh Home Bureau Unit to meet Wednesday July 12 at 1 30 pm at Mrs Ellen Wilson's home with lessons by Mrs Bernice Breeze and Mrs Cuma Neff.
The TEL class will hold its annual picnic at the city park on Tuesday July 11 at 11 a.m. A noon picnic dinner will be served and the regular class social and business meeting will follow in the afternoon. All members urged to attend for class officer elections. Visitors welcome.

The W S C S of Wesley Methodist Church will hold a meeting on Tuesday July 11 at 1 30 p m Members are urged to attend and visitors are welcome.
The Woodlawn Unit of Jefferson County Home Bureau will meet Wednesday July 12 at 7 30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Charles Compton 2425 College street instead of at Mrs. Keith Stonemetz home.
Rebekah Lodge will hold its regular meeting tonight at 8 o'clock. Members are urged to attend and participate in planned activities and discussions.
The Bethel Neighborhood Club will meet at the Club Center on Wednesday July 12 for a covered dish luncheon. All members are asked to be present as there is important business to be transacted.
The Mrs Vernon Chapter Number 233 of the Order of the Eastern Star will hold its stated meeting at the Masonic Temple on Tuesday July 11 at 7 30 pm Ida Morgan is named matron and Jesse Hill will serve as secretary.
The Sadie Robbins Circle of the First Baptist Church will meet at Mrs. Dale Hopkins home at 22285 Broadway on Tuesday July 11 at 2 p.m. Mrs. Gale Wielt will lead the devotional.
The Gleaners class of Park Avenue Baptist Church will hold a social in the church basement on Tuesday July 11 at 7 30 p m.
The Belle Rive Home Bureau Unit met at the home of Mrs. Lina Smith on Friday July 7 at 8pm with fifteen members and two guests present. Mrs Irma Bechtel led the major lesson Symptoms of Disease and Mrs Dora Mathus the minor Use of De odorants. A special Glass Etching lesson will be given by Mrs Brook Irwin at Mrs Pauline Neals July 21 at 1 pm. Members urged to attend the annual picnic for members and families at Benton Lake on Sunday August 6. A membership drive is planned to run through the month. Refreshments were served.
Ford Local 600 of the CIO United Auto Workers votes 75 to 63 to compel 550 officials to sign anti communist pledges by August 1 or face possible ouster. The move, first of its kind for a UAW local, aligns with Truman’s Korea policy and anti Soviet stance.
Former Mr Vernon resident Bert E Tucker died of a heart attack Saturday noon at a Peoria hospital while on a check-up. He was 76, a carpenter and contractor who lived in Chrisman for about 20 years. Surviving are his wife, son Parker W Tucker of Peoria, daughters Faye Olin and Kathryn Poston of Mt Vernon, and ten grandchildren. Funeral services are set for 10 Tuesday morning in Chrisman with burial at Holt cemetery there.
Maurice Warren of Ashley returned this morning from Sterling Illinois. Evan Davis of Oklahoma City arrived today. Dallas Bowman flew to Mount Vernon from Danville today. Lelan Allen of Taylorville Illinois traveled to this city today.
Mrs. W. T. Jones has received word of the death of her brother in law E. B. Miller of Leland. He formerly resided in Opdyke and is survived by two sons Lester of Leland and Herbert of Decatur, and two daughters Emma Grace Miller at home and Mrs. Margaret Servil of Leland. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p m tomorrow at Leland.
Three Mt. Vernon, Illinois graduates are listed on the Dean's List of Distinguished Students for the spring term at Oklahoma A&M College. John R. Howell of Engineering, Bobbie G Howard of Agriculture, and Jack HL Harris of Engineering meet the requirement of 15 hours with a B average or higher and no D or incomplete grades.
Berlin reports formation of international brigades to aid North Korea. The Berliner Stadblatt says brigades would be marshalled at Warsaw with East Germany among contributing areas. No confirmation from other sources available.
Mr and Mrs Bob Weatherford of 2223 Broadway welcomed a baby boy named Bobby Joe born Saturday evening at Good Samaritan Hospital. James Rutledge Cummins was born Sunday afternoon to Mr and Mrs James Cummins of Dix at the same hospital. Dallas Shelton and his wife welcomed a baby girl named Linda Ann yesterday at the hospital. Kirby Lynn was born this morning to Mr and Mrs Lester Laur of Scheller. Melvan Hawkins and wife of 1102 South 23rd became parents to a baby boy.
A baby boy named Melvan Eugene Jr was welcomed this morning. He was born at Good Samaritan Hospital to loving parents who celebrate the new arrival.
Maxine Woodruff and Wyrle Ramp of Mt. Vernon attended the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs tenth biennial convention in San Francisco July 2 to 7. Illinois delegates presented two resolutions, one memorial for Celia Howard and another urging vigilance against compulsory education trends for women. Approximately 80 Illinois members attended the Illinois banquet.
