Cooler weather nears Illinois offering a 30 percent thunderstorm chance while temperatures rise into the 90s for a fifth day. Showers loom for Southern Illinois by Saturday with statewide cooling into the weekend, then heat returns Monday.
Four persons were injured in multiple area traffic crashes yesterday with drivers charged for violations. Lynn A. Kite, 19, was in serious condition at Birmin Des日志 loge Hospital after a rollover on Tolle Road. Curtis B. Stokes, 19, was hospitalized for observation at Good Samaritan and charged with driving too fast for conditions. Ronald E. Gentry Jr., 15, injured when his bicycle was struck on Broadway and 2nd Streets. Donna L. Hammock, 18, cited for failure to yield. Rickey D. Cole, 19, charged with failure to yield after colliding with Bennie C. Pettit, 59. Aubrey B. Payne, 69, and Alan J. Koenig, 22, collided at Main and 4th Streets. Payne ticketed for failure to yield. Phyllis K. Staley, 36, charged with backing without due caution after backing into Patty A. Galagher, 16.
Vernon Cobb of Indianapolis and George Hale of Bluford were fined 150 and 100 dollars respectively after pleading guilty to separate driving while intoxicated charges in circuit court yesterday. Dominic Kazwell, 29, Oak Lawn, is hospitalized at Good Samaritan after a tractor fall at Robert Danis's Bluford farm.

A 20 year old Vernon man Bobby Martin pleaded guilty to violating his probation and to escaping a city policeman while in custody. Judge Harry L. Ziegler sentenced him in circuit court to three years probation, 34 weekends in jail, and extended probation to November 1978. He was fined $1,000 on the probation charges and $75 on the escape count for the May 3 incident.
An unsettled weekend with chances of showers and thunderstorms statewide Saturday into Sunday. Temperatures hold with highs in the 80s to 90s and lows in the 60s to 70s. Hot and humid conditions return Monday with highs in the 90s and lows around 70s.
Johnnie H. Hamilton 78 of Ewing died Wednesday afternoon at Franklin Hospital Benton. A retired farmer and coal miner born January 1 1899 in Johnson County he was a son of James H. and Amanda Hamilton. Survived by wife Modest Dunbar Hamilton five sons two brothers two sisters and five grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 1 p.m. Ina Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Clyatt officiating burial Kirk Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Ina Funeral Home.
Mt Vernon City Council weighs a policy for single bids on contracts after a heated session. The panel debated opening or reading again when only one bid arrives, citing bidding notices and time impacts. Mayor Martin opposed the Southern Illinois Fence Co bid of 3626 for sewer plant fencing, while Daisy May urged broader notice to attract more bidders. Council members Baril and May favored keeping bids sealed if needed or re bidding, with explicit rules for lone bids and readvertising delays.
AP reports drought stress across western Illinois with corn leaves curling and beans withered amid scarce rainfall. Adams County extension agent notes June rainfall below average, drought lingering into February last year, and potential yield impacts if dry spell continues. The dry area extends east to Peoria, with only two inches of rain since May and about two-thirds of normal annual rainfall.

Funeral services for Lilian Belle Tucker Flora, 79, of Flora, were held Monday at John T. Frank Funeral Home in Flora. Burial followed at Elmwood. She was married to Emzy Tucker of Mt. Vernon, who died in 1964. Surviving is Ruth Lane of Blu ford.
Mrs. Clarice G. Ingram 76 of Truman Arkansas died Wednesday at 2 a.m. in Jonesboro. Formerly of Macedonia and Hamilton County she was a member of Apostolic Church. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Apostolic Church in Benton with Rev. Arthur Sulivan and Rev. C W Downs. Burial in Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Visitation at Gholson Funeral Chapel McLeansboro today. She was born June 9 1903 in Hamilton County to Sherman F Shaffer and Alice Emily Mansell. Survived by husband Odria C Ingram three sons Odria F Ingram Benton Victor Morris Macedonia Robert Morris Winchester Tenn two daughters Mrs Johnnie King Truman Ark Mrs Alice Williams Benton two sisters Mrs Idelene Stewart Benton Mrs Irma Hill West Frankfort 18 grandchildren seven great.
