Washington AP report says Agriculture Department expects ongoing shift to larger, fewer farms. From 1935 to 1954 average farm size rose 10 to 18 percent each period, with 1954 59 expected similar gains. In 1935 60,812,700 farms. by 1996 about 4,968,000, a 28 percent drop. Family farms remain dominant at 96 percent in 1957, unchanged from 25 years before. Experts foresee a further 20 percent farm count decline by 1975, while average acres per farm rise over 50 percent.
