Local residents and visitors are listed in a bustling social roundup. Travels include fishing trips to the Ozarks and Alexandria Minnesota, with many trips to St. Louis for opera, hospitals, and family visits. Names include Hopkins, Zeigler, Murphy, Schmidt, Lovin, Benoist, Mount, Scott, Reece, and Williams among others.
Luke Hale aged 82 a retired farmer died at his Johnsonville home. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Johnsonville Methodist Church with Rev Mayo Ashbrook of Allendale officiating. Burial will be in Hale cemetery near Johnsonville. Hale born July 28 1867 in Johnsonville married Dora Durham February 23 1890 she survives. Also surviving are two daughters two brothers two sisters five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Ten year old Mau rice Lee Stapleton reportedly drowned after slipping into a dredge ditch while playing along the bank near his Newman home south of Champaign. The body had not been recovered at press time.
Lincoln Unit of the Home Bureau meets at Mrs. Max McCarty on Fairfield Road July 6 at 1 45 p m. Belle Rive Unit meets July 7 at 8 p m in Mrs. Lina Smiths home with major lesson Symptoms of Disease and minor Use of Codorants. All members urged to attend and visitors welcome.
The adult Presbyterian Choir will meet for rehearsal tonight at seven. Members are requested to attend.
A Moss family reunion was held at the home of Chas N Moss and Mr and Mrs Burl Rogers on Richview Road Monday evening July 3. A buffet supper was served to thirty two guests with out of town visitors including Mrs R C Longnecker of Los Angeles and others from Omaha Indianapolis Albion Ill Pinckneyville and Mt Vernon. Twenty one relatives attended from Mt Vernon.
New Haven residents watched a WNHC telecast as a private phone line crossed with the audio feed. A New Haven woman exclaimed it was too damn hot in front of her house and planned to stay outside for the evening. The cross occurred for four and a half hours, with listeners hearing the private conversation during the broadcast.
Seventeen nations join to erect a recumbent cross memorial in Santo Domingo on the Ozama river coast. The 0.5 mile long cross, 131 feet high, will house a beacon to guide ships and planes and form part of a 2500 acre park. An octagonal chapel beneath will hold Columbus remains now in Santo Domingo Cathedral.
Alva L. Marlow of 1728 Main retired after 38 years in railroad service largely in Mt. Vernon with L and N. He also worked at Ashley and Belleville. Retirement effective July 1. He taught school in Jefferson County 1903 to 1911 and studied telegraphy at Belle Rive. He first worked for Wabash R. A. in Decatur NL, then joined L and N in Sept 1912, returning in Sept 1918 and staying until retirement. He served under five superintendents, six agents, held several clerk posts, sold tickets during World War Two, and most recently was a freight clerk. A June 30 farewell included a surprise party and a radio token of esteem.
Herman Mays of 1105 Conger, driver for Egyptian Taxicab Co., was struck in the head and knocked unconscious while driving near Log Cabin Road west of Opdyke. He radioed for help, was found in his cab, treated, and released. Two men he allegedly picked up at Mt. Vernon city park were not found to have stolen his money. Investigation by Deputy Sheriff Russell Dalby pending.

Mr and Mrs Raymond Atchison welcomed a seven pound ten ounce son named Gary Ray born July 3 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St Louis The baby’s mother is former Aline McClure Mrs Earl Green of 1218 Welkins learned of a son born to Mr and Mrs Billy Tom Rainey of Dixon Illinois on July 3 weighing seven pounds Mrs Rainey was born Joyce Rich of Milwaukee Wisconsin Albert William Gentles and his wife of Mt Vernon welcomed a son born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital Kenneth and his wife from Scheller reported a son born July 4 at 9 28 pm weighing eight pounds five ounces named Rodney Kent Melvin Malcolm and wife at 10th and George Streets welcomed a daughter July 4 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital weighing five pounds named Thersa Diane.
O E Miley of Cisne and Cora Ilene Smith of Wayne City received a marriage license. Daniel Dale Mulch of Mt. Vernon rural route six and Darlene Mae Wilson of Mt. Vernon rural route seven also obtained a license.
Adam Kiselewski of near Scheller died at 9:35 a m yesterday at Marshall Browning Hospital Du Quoin Illinois. He was 83 years nine months and 19 days old and a well known Bald Hill township farmer. Services scheduled for Thursday 8:30 a m at Barbara church Scheller with the pastor officiating burial in St Barbara cemetery. Survived by wife Frances nine sons Edward Elkhart Frank Joe Adam Jr Alex Vince Felix John Leo a daughter Mrs Ethel Hofstetter and 22 grandchildren.
A General Mills official said a balloon found near Dillon Montana had been manufactured by the company and released at White Sands New Mexico for weather research. The balloon carried an experimental device to record upper atmosphere data and was released at 6 am Thursday. The device was recovered after the balloon’s flight. An alarm clock and battery used to release the instrument were found with the balloon. The Navy later released the balloon for the Bendix Research Laboratory in Detroit.
News from the Korean front reports a Red advance along the Han river region with Seoul near danger as U N forces redeploy. MacArthur notes three to four Communist divisions south of the Han while American ships and air power mass in support. Carrier activity increases as B 29s fly from March Field and Spokane.
Incumbent Elmer Thomas trailed Rep. Mike Monroney by more than 7,000 votes as returns from about 3,300 of 3,786 precincts neared completion. A runoff on July 25 seemed assured as the field split with Murray and Coe also winning strong totals in the early tallies.
William O'Neil of General Tire & Rubber Co says there is no tire shortage or threat of one. He cites ample rubber tire production and urges calm, noting ads warn against fear buying. Spokesmen for other tire makers and the Rubber Manufacturers Association support the view after reports of dealers urging immediate purchases.
A 13 year old boy in Princeton was critically injured by a piece of fireworks from an American Legion display. Richard Christianson touched a match to a bomb like firework at his sister Mrs Harold Bailey’s home and may lose sight as his right eye was gone and left eye burned. Two fingers torn from one hand and chest burned. Fire Chief Dan Donahue warned residents to bring in unexploded pieces.
Dillon Monts paratrooper John W Swetich of Fort Bragg racked up 123 parachute jumps in a single day, eclipsing the 105 jump mark set by Juan Iriate. Starting at 2 am, he reached 123 by 11:15 pm after delays from high winds and a knee injury on his 50th descent. He planned 150 jumps and said he wanted to keep the title in the U S.
W. R. Avent and Gene Cox purchase Robb's Coffee House at 8th and Casey. Avent, a 25 year restaurant veteran from Centralia, teams with businessman Mr. Vernon to relaunch the enterprise as the Bowl Coffee House and Tap Room.
Salvatore Giuliano, 28, known as the Bandit King who proclaimed a Sicilian government, was shot and killed in his mountain hideout near Palermo after a long government dragnet. Police say his band killed nearly 100 officers. two thousand Carabinieri hunted him for eight months and most of his gang was wiped out.
