Rynd Lawder Strattan longtime Mt Vernon businessman and former resident died in St Louis Missouri this morning. He was the son of Mrs Keith Strattan of 419 North Johnson and had lived in St Louis for several years. The body will be returned to Mt Vernon for funeral services at Myers Chapel with arrangements incomplete. He is survived by his wife Loretta and a sister Lavina.

About 500 people are expected for a Fourth of July memorial on Kaskaskia Island to hear the 650-pound Liberty Bell of the West ring at 1 p.m. The bell, shipped from France, first rang on July 4, 1778 and now rests in a one room building near historic St Mary’s church.
