Dowzer Plant Fire Damages Loading Dock And Sparks Smoke
Fire at Dowzer Electric Company's Plant 3 in Fountain Place Industrial Park damaged transformers wiring in overhead doors and a crane side of a truck. Firefighters confined damage to the southeast corner, started in scrap, caused smoke throughout the building, and did not halt overall operations. Estimated dollar loss not yet determined. wiring will require rewiring. Fire started at 7:45 p.m. Saturday and was contained by Jefferson Fire Protection District units and Mt. Vernon crews.

Walkaway From Menard Prison Is Recaptured

In Marion Illinois opponents of an east west scenic highway through the Shawnee Forest testified at a Shawnee National Forest meeting that the project costing over 50 million dollars would scar the wilderness, disrupt wildlife management and waste money. Proponents argued the road would attract tourists, better Southern Illinois living and improve access to scenic areas. The meeting reviewed five corridor options including doing nothing, a limited access highway, a road and trail combo, a scenic hiking trail or upgrading existing roads. About 50 people attended, with roughly six speaking. The initiative traces to debates from 40 years ago and gained earlier support by the Forest Service and development groups in the 1960s.
