Silas E. Riggs Dies at 79 in Mount Vernon

Silas E. Riggs of 1615 South 10th Street died at 4 45 p.m. Friday at Jefferson Memorial Hospital at age 79 years six months and 13 days. He was a retired Mt. Vernon Car Mfg. Co. employee and operated a used furniture store. Funeral at Myers Chapel at 2 00 p.m. Monday. Burial in Williams Chapel Cemetery Franklin County. He was born December 18 1886 in Franklin County. He married Lillie Harmon in Mt. Vernon in 1930. she died August 20 1959. Survived by two stepdaughters, a brother Burt Riggs and several nephews and nieces. He was a member of the B R C A.

William E. Allen 80 dies in McLeansboro

William Edwin Allen aged 80 of McLeansboro died at midnight at the Wilmar Restorium in Carmi. A retired farmer, he is survived by two sons Edwin L. Allen and William G. Allen of Belleville and four grandchildren. Born August 4, 1886 in Hamilton County, he was married to Carrie Butler who preceded him in death. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and the body is at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

Johnsons Settle Down At Ranch

President Johnson and Lady Bird plan a quiet family party at the LBJ Ranch for Luci Johnson on her 19th birthday. Luci’s fiancé Pat Nugent, 22, attends and the couple will wed August 6 in Washington at Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The Texas White House notes the event will be a family affair with cake and candles. Luci, raised Episcopalian, was baptized Catholic on her 18th birthday. Nugent is Catholic.

A motor in a compressor shorted out and filled the Granada Theater with smoke yesterday. Firemen answered the alarm at 12:40 p.m. The compressor sat in the basement. Slight smoke damage reported.

Mishap Causes Over $175 Damage In City Collision

Two cars collided at Casey and South 10th around 5 37 p m yesterday. Helen L Dare 41 of 1413 South 12th and Vern C Huff 68 of Bluford drove the autos. Huff car sustained over 100 in damage and Dare’s car about 75 police estimated.

Bomb Accident Kills 8 Viets Near Bien Hoa Village

Eight Vietnamese civilians including seven children died when a U.S. Air Force jet bomb accidentally dropped antipersonnel ordnance on a village near Bien Hoa Air Base north of Saigon. Fifty pupils and a teacher were among the private school victims with many more wounded. an investigation cited a stuck cannister.

CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP Explorer 33 failed to reach lunar orbit as the booster second stage burned too hot during a three day mission. The U S has nine attempts in eight years to reach the moon with American probes while the Soviets achieved Luna 10 last April. Two more tries were planned this year.

Freeport Police Threaten Mass Quit Over Pay Demands

Freeport Illinois 29 member police force warns of mass resignation if the city council does not approve longevity pay and clothing allowance increases. Chief Earl Marsh and 28 officers demand 2 percent longevity per three years and a $25 boost to the $125 annual clothing allowance. If they quit, Steопhenson County and Illinois State Police would cover patrols. The council meets Tuesday to discuss the budget ahead of a July 8 decision.

Broughton Post Office Dedication Set for July Event

On Tuesday July 5 at 7 p.m. the dedication of the Broughton post office quarters will occur with Senator Paul A. Douglas and Congressman Kenneth J. Gray expected to attend. Reading Club In Junior Dept At Public Library Mt Vernon

Mt Vernon Public Library begins enrollment on July 5 for a summer reading club in the Junior Department covering July and August. Theme builds a library. A poster chart is issued at enrollment and bricks are awarded for each book read. Bonus bricks for last year's participants. Diploma certificates awarded August 27 for completing building a library.

Porter Attends U C T Session

W B Bill Porter returned from the 79th annual convention of the United Commercial Travelers of America in Hot Springs Arkansas as delegate of Mt Vernon Council 523 UCT. About 1550 delegates wives and guests attended. UCT reported work on retarded children cancer and youth with the retarded children project as its top priority. UCT has spent 2 million on scholarships for teachers of the retarded in five years. Next year’s meeting will be in San Francisco in late June. Mt Vernon UCT picnic will be at the game farm Sunday July 10 at 1 pm inviting all members and families. The local council has over 1300 members.

Medicare impacts in hospitals across Georgia and Dallas

The report notes six patients checked out, three admitted. E D Rivers of Lakeland, former Georgia governor, 70, is in Parkland for a periodic checkup with Medicare 65 stamp on his form. Madge English, 72, of Dallas, with a broken hip, calls Medicare a blessing. Dr. Fred Bonte says Medicare is easier than expected. Five Medicare patients admitted Friday. 82 other Parkland patients transferred.
