Woman survives six days in Big Bend cave after desert ordeal
A 46 year old Houston woman Wilma White found alive after six days in a cave with a tiny spring south of Alpine Texas near the Rio Grande. She used the 23rd Psalm and positive thinking to endure 115 degree heat and scarce water. Her husband, Clifford White, died during the search and was found earlier near their wrecked station wagon. Authorities say she kept track of time with rocks and survived on scarce cactus berries. Civil Air Patrol pilot notified rescuers who dropped relief supplies and ferried her from the canyon.

Fire destroys barn and hay north of Drivers
A 3:00 p.m. fire north of Drivers destroyed a barn and about 200 bales of hay at the Hershel Thornton home. Mt. Vernon rural firefighters found no resident on the farm and no insurance coverage was carried. The hay belonged to Bill Williams of RFD 1 Woodlawn, who reported the blaze after seeing smoke from his home a mile and a half away. Cause remains unknown.

Abandoned mine swallows tipple near Breese Ill
A 420 foot deep abandoned coal mine shaft swallowed part of a 100 foot high tipple and threatened Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tracks near Breese. Watchman Arthur Bromfield reported a rumble inside the mine before a fast B&O train passed, vibrations aiding the collapse.
