Berlin reports say Red Polish Army sealed the East German border to halt workers fleeing a three day Poznan revolt. Western observers estimate deaths near 200 to 600, with up to 240 tanks deployed and 2,500 arrests as a nationwide propaganda drive follows. Catholic bishops appeal for mercy.
Secretary of Defense Wilson told the Senate subcommittee that the United States is not behind the Soviet Union in air power and that the B52 heavy bomber is superior to the Russian bomber. He warned that if reversed, concern would be high and discussed increased Air Force funding and modernization progress with allies in mind.
A can of gasoline thought to be water was tossed on a hot stove to extinguish a blaze, causing a burst of fire that killed five people in Gonzalez Texas. The house burned. victims included Mrs John Gevera and her children Martin 2 and David Ramos 3, Virginia Ramos 12, and Alberto Ramos 2. Deputy Sheriff Ray Bright Jr. reported the blaze followed the gasoline toss.
The forecast projects temperatures 2 to 6 degrees above normal across Illinois with normal highs around 84 in the north and 99 in the south. Lows tonight near 62 in the north and 66 in the south. Expect warm and humid conditions mainly in the south through Saturday, with a brief cooler spell Friday and Saturday. Precipitation totals between a quarter and a half inch are expected in scattered showers, mostly south and central Tuesday, north Wednesday, and across most areas Friday.
A double explosion at Sylvania Electric’s Bayside Queens research center injured nine, damaged the second floor metallurgy lab and 25 windows. The Mt. Vernon theft involved $120 taken from a car parked near the swimming pool last night. Joe Bratton of 1710 Main Street told police the billfold was in the glove compartment and the car was locked. on return the money was missing from the floor.
Federal mediation leaders arranged separate Pittsburgh meetings with the Steelworkers Union and U S Steel Corp representatives to explore real differences. Joseph F. Finnegan Clyde Mills and Robert H. Moore will attend Thursday sessions with union President David J. McDonald and industry chief John A. Stephens. McDonald cautioned the duration remains uncertain.
The United Steelworkers Union officers and members go without pay as a general steel shutdown begins. Spokesmen say the no paycheck policy covers all union staff up to the $40,000 a year President David J. McDonald.
The walkout at midnight Saturday stopped 90 percent of the nation's steel production, threatening shortages in autos and appliances. Rail deliveries halted. steel workers earned about $2.46 an hour, roughly 65 million dollars weekly in wages lost, as both sides blamed the collapse of negotiations.

Three Wisconsin men drowned on Lake Winnebago, three on Lake Delta near Rome New York, and two farmhands were killed by lightning near St. Cloud Minnesota. A hot humid surge from the Gulf had produced 100 degree temperatures across the region, with Chicago hitting 103 as records fell.
Jefferson County calls for volunteers to roof the Mt. Vernon Fair Grounds 4-H Show Pavilion to finish before the Mt. Vernon State Fair in two weeks. Farm Adviser Don Lee says roofing starts Thursday at 8 30 AM, with a schedule set to finish by fair time. In Griffin Georgia six people died and a seventh was seriously hurt when one car struck another broadside at a highway junction Sunday. Survivor Jo Ann Hyde, 24, of Senoia, remained in serious condition at a Griffin hospital. Hyde's parents Archie G. Hyde and Virginia Louise Hyde and sister Elaine, eight, perished. Also killed were William Samuel Lunceford 18 and James Alvin Howell 18 of Fayetteville and Milton G. Whitlock 23 of near Lenois.
Jefferson County tax collections near the two million dollar mark for the year ending June 30 show totals of 31,890,243.69 on personal and real estate properties. County Treasurer Kenneth Randall notes 1956 collections are 139,401.46 ahead of last year, with June 30 figures from a year ago at 1,750,842.23.
Two large airliners the Trans World Airlines Super Constellation and United Airlines DC7 collided mid air in clear weather over the Grand Canyon Arizona. Both planes plunged into the canyon with the loss of all passengers and crew. Rescue teams faced rugged terrain and shifting winds as investigators from the Civil Aeronautics Board and related agencies began their grim task. The sequence began with both planes taking off from Los Angeles within minutes of each other and ending in a disaster that shocked the nation.

Two year old Joseph D Larsen, son of Rev Harold and Mrs Harold Larsen of Chicago, drowned Sunday in a shallow farm creek near Sparta. The incident occurred on the property of a relative.

Ground breaking ceremonies were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the corner of Fisher's Lane and Fifteenth Street for a new South Side Baptist Chapel. Over 200 attended as S Otho Williams and G C Smith led services. The church began meeting July 26, 1954 at 1701 South Tenth Street with 23 in attendance.
President Eisenhower met aides from Washington at Gettysburg amid weekend guests Maj. Gen. and Mrs. Leonard D. Heaton as they marked the 40th wedding anniversary with a cake and exchanged gifts. The heifer and flowering peach tree were among tributes from Republicans and White House correspondents.
Marengo Illinois authorities report 18 year old Clifford Blanton of Kingston drowned Sunday night in an abandoned gravel pit filled with water near Marengo. The drowning occurred in a remote rural area and police are investigating the accident.
