State gas tax rises to six cents in Illinois

The Illinois House approved a one cent gas tax increase to six cents, sending the bill to Governor Otto Kerner. The measure, backed by Rep. Eight boys aged 10 to 14 in Mt Vernon admit at least 22 thefts of purses and bill folds over nine months. Gerard Sparks Jr., 14, of 605 South 12th Street, charged with theft and jailed. others released to parents to report July 5. Police continue a broad probe into the downtown purse thefts tied to late last year through this week.

Pekin Area Crash Claims Mortons Bruce Schombein

Bruce Schombein, 38, of Morton, was killed when his car collided with an auto driven by James D. Litwiller, 23, of Hopedale, on a rural road about eight miles southeast of Pekin. Litwiller suffered head injuries and was listed in fair condition at a Pekin hospital.

Carol Martindale a student teacher at Mt Vernon will be one of the contestants next week when Miss Illinois is chosen at Aurora. The pretty brown eyed candidate does not expect to be chosen queen but looks forward to the experience. She is an Air Force officer's daughter who has traveled widely in the U S and Orient. Carol began college abroad, then attended SIU before entering beauty pageants. She won Miss Southern at SIU and believes many could win at Aurora, staying optimistic about her future.

Jets Lose Bombers In Haiphong Area Raids

U S Navy bombers left two fuel oil dumps burning west of Haiphong after strikes in land near the port as Washington acknowledged possible American fire on a Soviet ship. Two Skyhawk jets were shot down by antiaircraft fire. both pilots are missing. The action formed part of 115 Friday strike missions across North Vietnam, targeting rail lines, storage depots, bridges, and anti aircraft positions. A Marine helicopter was shot down near Phu Bai, with five Marines killed and seven wounded.

Coma for Teen Burn Victim After Motel Explosion

David Campbell, 19, of Mt. Vernon, remained in a coma at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in St. Louis after a motel explosion and fire near Harrisburg on Wednesday morning. Fellow victim Ted Quinn, also 19, showed improvement at Jefferson Memorial Hospital from burn injuries.

The city of Mt Vernon reports 33 building permits in June totaling $205,557 and lifts six month year to date building value to $1,755,922. The six month total compares to $1,559,278.55 the prior year, a $196,643.45 increase. Boys Not Dead Hiding In Tree

Salt Lake City sheriff deputies searched a canal for two missing boys, Douglas Biesinger aged 5 and Scott Wiseman aged 6, fearing drowning. They were found safe in a tree house 100 yards away as their parents watched, an older brother uncovering the hidden boys. A deputy locally noted the boys received a "good scotch blessing" from their parents.
