School Tax Hike Beaten Third Time in Kankakee
Voters in Kankakee School District 111 defeated three tax hike measures for a third time in a year. The education tax would rise from 1.74 to 2.14 per 100 of assessed value, losing 5,886 to 3,856, while a 20 percent maintenance tax increase from 37 to 58 cents failed 6,198 to 3,548. The district covers virtually all Kankakee schools and some township schools outside the city.

Willie H Smith survives Vietnam helicopter crash in jungle
A Vernon man AE 1 Willie H Smith was rescued after five days hidden in dense jungle in Vietnam. The aviation electronics technician said the five crew members escaped on January 14 after their helicopter was shot down on a rescue mission. One wounded American died and was buried hastily. Smith, married to Minnie L Smith of 14 south 12th street, contacted his wife at 7:00 am. He served nine years in the Navy and is with a helicopter rescue unit in Vietnam for a second tour. He previously served aboard the USS Ranger for nine months and was with the rescue unit since last September.

Seven Enroll In Aviation Course At Rend College
Seven students enrolled last night to begin an adult aviation education course at Rend Lake College. Enrollment will be open through next Tuesday evening February 6. The course meets each Tuesday night from 7:09 to 10:00 for 16 weeks in Room 304 Building B. Instructors are Charles C. Simmons and Larry Kienlen, regular FAA certified flight instructors at Mt. Fire destroys Mt. Vernon area home in cleaning fluid blaze
A fire four miles north of Mt. Vernon on the Tolle Road destroyed a newly valued $30,000 Bowlin home. Contractor Bowlin spilled cleaning fluid which ignited from a gas pilot light, engulfing the house. The Bowlin family escaped unharmed. furniture and possessions were lost. Loss estimated at $30,000.
