In St Louis a metal worker, George Hoeflinger, 33, was shot and killed by Patrolman Leo Schneidermeyer while fleeing arrest at the home of widow Marie Shaughnessy. An impostor posing as a medical examiner for an industrial firm had arranged a home physical for her.
Princess Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh depart London for a 30,000 mile royal journey visiting Australia and New Zealand after substituting for King and Queen. The pair will travel via Libya and Kenya to Ceylon, then Australia from Perth on April 1 and New Zealand from Wellington on May 7.

Sadie May Kolmer, 46, died at her home 705 south 12th street. Funeral set for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church with Fr. James P. Burke. burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation after 11 a.m. Friday at Myers Chapel. Born October 93, 1905 in Washington Indiana to Alexander T Weeks and Lid ia Weeks. Survived by husband Tony Kolmer, daughter Dorothy Greenwalt, three brothers and two sisters and three grandchildren.
John Tommy Eller aged one year eight months died at his family home in Farrington Township. The burial will be at Donoho Prairie cemetery after a service at Donoho Prairie Christian church led by Rev. Ernest Crooks. Visitation at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix after 5 p.m. and at grandparents’ home in Texico after 1 p.m. Friday. Born May 3, 1950, he was the son of L. C. and Nona Simmons Eller, with siblings Jimmy and Joyce Ann and grandparents Tom Simmons of Texico and Lawrence Eller of Bluford.
The body of Pfc. Herbert La Verne Bradford will arrive Friday for funeral services and burial. Visitation at his parents’ Bluford home precedes a Sunday service at New Home church at 2:30 p.m. Burial follows in New Home cemetery. Bradford, born September 15, 1929, served with the 1st Cavalry, 5th Regiment. He was married to Mary Charlene Littlejohn and survived by his wife, parents, two brothers Irves and Carl, and two sisters Irene Branson and Freda Nation. American Legion will conduct services.
Mt Vernon high school gym hosts a doubleheader to aid the March of Dimes. Kiwanis clubs of Mt Vernon and McLeansboro provide comedy and basketball, with younger Jaycees in a regular game. Doors open at 7 15 p m. admission 50 cents all proceeds support infantile paralysis research.
Jim Downey of 400 South 19th Street reported to police headquarters that his red and white bicycle was stolen at the library after 4:00 p.m. yesterday. He provided the description and the time of the theft to officers.

Mr and Mrs Harry Neal of RFD 1 Vernon welcomed a baby boy named William Wesley born at 11 10 last evening weighing eight pounds 9 12 ounces. Mr and Mrs Thomas Earl Fry of Waltonville welcomed a seven pounds seven ounce girl born at 3 11 a m today who remains unnamed.

A 38 year old Kentucky woman, fearing commitment to a mental institution, killed her three children Sally 10 Kitty 7 James 5 and then herself in a car near Gentryville Indiana. The victims were found by state police. a note signed Virginia explained the act as an escape from treatment. Husband James Rudy Jr. of Owensboro reported the couple’s routine morning and that she and the boy were absent at lunch.
President Truman departed National Airport at 10 12 a m on a non stop flight to survey flood damaged sectors of Pennsylvania Ohio West Virginia and Kentucky. The four engine Constel lation carried him through light rain as his Independence rested on the west coast for routine overhaul.

Three high school bands from Mt. Vernon Centralia and Salem join for the Tri City concert at Salem Community High. The event marks an annual tradition since 1938, with a combined rehearsal and a public concert at 8 pm in the Salem Gymnasium. Highlights include Tschaikowsky Symphony in F minor Irene Overture and a majorette finale, no admission charged.
