Mr and Mrs Dominick Monge of Fairfield welcomed a son Dimitri born last evening at Good Samaritan Hospital. A daughter arrived for Mr and Mrs Derrell Edward Roeder Route 2 Mr Vernon at Good Samaritan this morning. Mr and Mrs George Andy Brieseacher Route 3 Mr Vernon welcomed a daughter this afternoon at Good Samaritan. Mr and Mrs Everett Woodward Jr of 1116 North Wabash Wabash Ind welcomed a seven pound 13 ounce son born January 25. Mrs Woodward is the former Miss Emily Elbery of Mt Vernon South 27th street.
Good Samaritan reports admissions for Katharine Laur Catharine Howie Betty Chrisman and Blu ford resident Guy Benton. Discharges include Arthur Brach Helen Mick infant Stephen Kemper Allen Bertha May Williams Betty Maye Sinks and infant Terry Lee. Jefferson Memorial lists admissions Harry Montague George Lomax Virginia Pogue and Hester Strickland with discharge of Dan McLaughlin and Ruby Buck Dorothy Henry.
Field School Pack No. 102 will hold its January pack meeting at the junior high school cafeteria Monday evening. The theme is Strengthen the Arm of Liberty as the pack pursues its lodge crusade. A knighting ceremony will present awards to boys who earned them and invites mothers and Cub master to attend. Plans for the February meeting will be made.
Gerald L. Graves 24 of Mt. Vernon, a U S Army paratrooper, was severely injured in a parachute jump at Fort Bragg North Carolina. He is married to Betty Yandell and is stationed near Fayetteville. Graves suffered back and leg injuries and is hospitalized at Fort Bragg after another jumper landed on his chute causing a collapse.
London reports that Moscow radio claimed the discovery of a 141 year old man in a Soviet Azerbaijan mountain village near the Iranian border. The villager Mahmud Aivadov heads a family of 120 including great great grandchildren.
George Bourland visited Springfield over the weekend. Mr and Mrs Edgar Poorman visited relatives in Odin Sunday. Fred Schmidt and Mt Vernon visitors were here Sunday. National Guards at Shawneetown met Lonnie Knox and Bill Rodatz. Mrs Kenneth Lawhorn and Mrs Clyde Knox visited Mt Vernon Monday. Paul Maddox and daughter Marjorie with Bill Stegal in Parkersburg Sunday. Mrs Garrock Robinson seriously ill south of town. Death of Florence Lewis Grace reported. funeral in St Louis. Nellie Lewis and Emma Sides attended. Mrs William Edwards visited Mt Vernon Monday. Lucille Gaskins of Centralia spent weekend here. Lyle Endicott H H Weisbecker Roscoe Troutt attended C C F Lodge in Mt Vernon Tuesday.
Funeral services for William John Browder 61 of 623 South 12th Street will be held at Farnsworth Methodist Church south of Keenes at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Cyrus Maulding of Benton will officiate with burial in Farnsworth Cemetery. Browder died from exposure after being lost overnight during a coon-hunting trip in Wayne County. Coroner James Colbert ruled death due to exposure and fatigue after a 12 hour woods loss in freezing weather.
Mrs Mary Walter 82 of 518 North 11th Street died at 8 10 AM today at a hospital in Parsons Kansas. Funeral services set for Monday 2 PM at Rude Funeral Home Parsons with burial in Parsons Cemetery. She born January 15 1868 in Nebraska daughter of William and Lovina Pitt Calkin. Survived by son William Richard Walter Mt Vernon sister Mrs Paul Dickerson Parsons and grandson Dickie Walter Mt Vernon.
Al Kotovsky former Mt. Vernon A and P manager has been transferred to Granite City to oversee the A and P store there. Lavern Ahlf succeeds him as Mt. Vernon manager after four years as assistant at Centralia store. Ahlf and his wife with their four year old son will move to Mt. Vernon soon.
Fifty pints of blood were donated during the Red Cross Bloodmobile visit in Mt Vernon yesterday. The effort fell 30 pints short of the quota with sixty donors registering but ten rejected. Twenty two donors walked in without appointments and volunteered. The next bloodmobile visit is set for February 23.
January society notes cover Bethe PTA meeting led by President Mrs. Oneta Tucker with talks by Principal W H Culline and performances by students, Summersville PTA planning for January 30, and meetings of the Federated Women's Club International Relations Study Group hosted by Mrs. Anna Parr with a lecture by Mrs. Parr on The Negro Problem in the United States. The Field Unit Home Bureau meets January 31 on worry and mental health, and the Tolle Road Friendship Club hosts a gathering with 12 members and guests.
The Wesley Church Woman's Society met with Morning and Afternoon sessions led by Mrs. Chalin Deck and others. Debates and programs covered missions, adoration, love, and women of the Bible. 17 members attended. Kiwanis Club heard Dr. Robert Cochran on vocational rehabilitation and viewed a Comeback film. New members Leland Elliott and Earl Krueger joined. $100 was donated to the March of Dimes. bowling followed at Mt. Vernon Bowl.
Varnell Lodge No. 296 met in regular session at 7 30 p m in LO O F Temple with Gladys Shorts presiding as Noble Grand She appointed the visiting committee and trustees Zella Talbott was elected Staff Captain Several new applications were taken Lillian Dorris was the only member not missing a meeting in the past year and received a lift from the retiring Noble Grand Telma Shehorn Officers Naomi Bogan Gladys Shurtz Opal Hertenstein and Thelma Shehorn were the other members not missing meetings last year.
England's archbishop orders Church of England priests to keep politics out of sermons about Britain's general election on February 23. No sermons should support or criticize any party, said Archbishop Dr Cyril F Garbett in a diocesan leaflet.
Mrs Willie Sandy Mrs Rube Henson and Mrs Elmer Faulkner led a meeting opening with America. They voted to donate 5.10 to the March of Dimes. Prizes went to Mrs Elmer Sandy Mrs Lulu Henson Mrs Ruby Artis Mrs Florence Johnson Mrs Bertie Arnold and Mrs Alberta Pennington. February gathering will be at Florene Stroud home with co host Mrs Emily Goodwin.
A Pulaski county circuit court jury awarded Paducah Illinois plaintiffs $51,500 against the estate of Metropolis truck driver James Johnston for a June 11 1948 four death truck collision on highway 37 near Grand Chain. Mrs Margaret Jean Garrison received $20,000 personal damages and $10,000 for her husband’s death while relatives of Boaz and Helen Marie Metzger were each awarded $10,000 and Rem Con Pipe Co of Paducah owner of the car $1,500.
