Boy Scout News January Pack Meeting Planned

Field School Pack No. 102 will hold its January pack meeting at the junior high school cafeteria Monday evening. The theme is Strengthen the Arm of Liberty as the pack pursues its lodge crusade. A knighting ceremony will present awards to boys who earned them and invites mothers and Cub master to attend. Plans for the February meeting will be made.

Mt. Vernon Paratrooper Hurt in Fort Bragg Jump

Gerald L. Graves 24 of Mt. Vernon, a U S Army paratrooper, was severely injured in a parachute jump at Fort Bragg North Carolina. He is married to Betty Yandell and is stationed near Fayetteville. Graves suffered back and leg injuries and is hospitalized at Fort Bragg after another jumper landed on his chute causing a collapse.

Russian man 141 years old reported in Azeri village

London reports that Moscow radio claimed the discovery of a 141 year old man in a Soviet Azerbaijan mountain village near the Iranian border. The villager Mahmud Aivadov heads a family of 120 including great great grandchildren.

Rites Saturday For Mt V Victim Of Hunting Trip

Funeral services for William John Browder 61 of 623 South 12th Street will be held at Farnsworth Methodist Church south of Keenes at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Cyrus Maulding of Benton will officiate with burial in Farnsworth Cemetery. Browder died from exposure after being lost overnight during a coon-hunting trip in Wayne County. Coroner James Colbert ruled death due to exposure and fatigue after a 12 hour woods loss in freezing weather.

Mrs Mary Walter Dies at 82 in Parsons Kansas

Mrs Mary Walter 82 of 518 North 11th Street died at 8 10 AM today at a hospital in Parsons Kansas. Funeral services set for Monday 2 PM at Rude Funeral Home Parsons with burial in Parsons Cemetery. She born January 15 1868 in Nebraska daughter of William and Lovina Pitt Calkin. Survived by son William Richard Walter Mt Vernon sister Mrs Paul Dickerson Parsons and grandson Dickie Walter Mt Vernon.

New Manager at A P Store Here

Al Kotovsky former Mt. Vernon A and P manager has been transferred to Granite City to oversee the A and P store there. Lavern Ahlf succeeds him as Mt. Vernon manager after four years as assistant at Centralia store. Ahlf and his wife with their four year old son will move to Mt. Vernon soon.

Fifty Pints of Blood Donated in Mt Vernon Visit

Fifty pints of blood were donated during the Red Cross Bloodmobile visit in Mt Vernon yesterday. The effort fell 30 pints short of the quota with sixty donors registering but ten rejected. Twenty two donors walked in without appointments and volunteered. The next bloodmobile visit is set for February 23.

The Wesley Church Woman's Society met with Morning and Afternoon sessions led by Mrs. Chalin Deck and others. Debates and programs covered missions, adoration, love, and women of the Bible. 17 members attended. Kiwanis Club heard Dr. Robert Cochran on vocational rehabilitation and viewed a Comeback film. $51,500 Judgment In Death of Four

A Pulaski county circuit court jury awarded Paducah Illinois plaintiffs $51,500 against the estate of Metropolis truck driver James Johnston for a June 11 1948 four death truck collision on highway 37 near Grand Chain. Mrs Margaret Jean Garrison received $20,000 personal damages and $10,000 for her husband’s death while relatives of Boaz and Helen Marie Metzger were each awarded $10,000 and Rem Con Pipe Co of Paducah owner of the car $1,500.
