Ernest O. Hawkins, 69, retired merchant and longtime Dix resident, died at 8:40 this morning at his home. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Dix Christian church with Rev. Harry Black officiating. burial in Zion Grove cemetery. He was born September 21, 1885 in Marion County, survived by wife Vena, son Ervin R. of Dix, two granddaughters, two great grandchildren, and brothers Estel and Everett of Walnut Hill.

City And Rural Firemen Called Mt. Vernon Fire Alarms
City and rural firemen answered three alarms yesterday afternoon in Mt. Vernon. Early in the afternoon a smoking furnace at 212 South 16th Street caused a scare but no damage. At 4 05 p.m. a grass fire at Beverly Heights was controlled with no damage. At 4 33 p.m. rural firemen responded to a grass fire at 725 Airport Road with no damage.
