The Bakerville Free Will Baptist Church on state route 37 near Mt. Vernon was heavily damaged by a 10 30 p m fire. Firefighters fought 45 minutes to contain the blaze with rural crews aiding and the pastor estimating damage at 3000 to 4000 dollars. The cause was blamed on an overheated furnace after evening services.

CHICAGO January 25 a mother of ten children and her 16 year old daughter drowned in the Des Plaines river while attempting a rescue after the daughter Carol Jean walked onto ice to fetch a water bucket and broke through. A 12 year old son tried to help and a second son Edward swam to assist but both vanished in the undertow. Mrs Rose Green 38 and Carol Jean 16 were residents near the river at Summit. The mother had been divorced from Theodore Green who has been sought since June on a non support charge.
