The Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a public forum for Mt. Vernon City Council candidates on February 18. Nine candidates filed nominating petitions for two seats and the primary is February 25. Ford Press Conference Signals Cautious Middle East Stance
President Ford warned the Middle East danger is serious as diplomatic efforts to avert war intensify with Israel and Arab states. He said arms are being supplied to regional states to maintain military capability while talks continue and refused to rule out a future oil field takeover in a petroleum cutoff though it would be extreme. Ford said he cannot foresee reentering Vietnam but will seek $300 million in military aid to South Vietnam. He cited no new costly programs and urged energy action amid Democratic pressure on health care and welfare benefits, while hoping for continued detente with the Soviet Union.
