Rural Fire Chief Carl Jones urged Jefferson protection district residents to exchange old fire cards for new ones. The cards show dial numbers for reporting fires and business calls and are free at the fire station 806 South 17th Street. To report emergencies call CH 2-2151 and for business calls CH 4-3824.
Manager Joe Winfrey of the local Chamber of Commerce announced today that a chamber sponsored course in practical politics will begin on Tuesday January 26 at 7 30 a m. This will be the organizational meeting open to any citizen of Jefferson county interested in a grass roots study of non partisan politics. An eight weeks course was completed several months ago with 12 local business men and women participating. All participants have reported the course as a new experience, giving a new prospective on politics in action. Both men and women are invited to enroll.
Ex wife alleges Dr Spears manipulated Taylor into boarding the fatal flight at Tampa. FBI questioned Mrs Spears about hypnosis claims and a $37,500 life policy found after the crash. Spears drove Taylor’s car and said Taylor sought financial security for his family, while denying direct knowledge of the plane boarding.
AP reports Joe Ditmeier aged 46 of Mount Olive died when his truck was rear ended by a truck driven by Ray R Cook 27 of Overland Missouri on U S Route 66 a mile south of Mount Olive. Police investigated the fatal crash.
An estate sale buyer returned a pair of shoes to the vendor on Thursday claiming both shoes are left feet. Deputy Sheriff Wallace Compton, administrator of the estate, explained the misfit and said the items were intended as a matched pair.

The 4 H Production Sale at Beau Brehm Ranch near Belle Rive will begin at 12 39 pm Saturday with a prize heifer donated to Jefferson County 4 H. BB Miss Choice A 16th was presented to 12 year old Douglas Williams at the Mt Vernon State Fair last July. The King City Federal Savings and Loan Association will fund another 4 H prize heifer this year to encourage beef projects locally. The sale drew about a thousand attendees from 11 states last year and grossed 27205 from 41 animals. The prize animal will be kept on the ranch until awarded during the Mt Vernon Fair in July.
Washington AP reports consumer prices fell one tenth of one percent in December marking the first decrease in four months. Lower costs for food clothing and durable goods mainly caused the dip while services rose. The index touched 125.5 from the 1947-49 base, 1.1 percent above December 1958, and about 575000 workers will gain 1 to 2 cent hourly raises tied to the index.

Mr and Mrs Lloyd Mays of 904 Forest Ave greet a daughter Iris Dureen born at midnight weighing seven pounds fifteen ounces.
Four candidates had filed petitions for major Jefferson county offices by late morning. The filing deadline for states attorney, circuit clerk and police is next Monday. Circuit Clerk Jerry Gott, Republican, sought reelection on Wednesday, while Newton Brown, Democrat, filed for coroner. Jay B. Stringer, Republican, filed for states attorney the same day. This morning Coroner Ray Hefley, Republican, filed for reelection.
An auto collision was reported in Mt. Vernon yesterday at 4 40 p m involving Alice H Jacobsen of 2200 Olive and John Irvin Morris of 3212 Central at Ninth and Main. Morris’s car sustained about 200 dollars in damage while Jacobsen’s was more than 75 dollars.
A grass fire burned about ten acres after dark last night at the home of Lester Huston on Tolle Road four miles northeast of Mt Vernon. Rural firefighters controlled the blaze with no property damage reported.
Guy Pennington filed suit for divorce against Mary Alice Pennington in circuit court here alleging desertion. The couple wed January 26, 1957 and lived together until May 1958, per the complaint.
Two survivors, Ian Kelton and his wife, say they will travel by ship for the final leg to Ecuador after the Avianca airliner crash near Montego Bay killed 37. They escaped through an emergency exit as the jet overturned and burned, with no warning of the disaster. The Jamaican government named a special commissioner to investigate, and some witnesses suspected a left landing gear collapse.
A bitter Arctic outbreak spread across the eastern two thirds of the country with subfreezing readings from the Gulf Coast to Florida and freezing temps in New Orleans Atlanta and Tallahassee. Dakotas Minnesota reported below zero as Texas eased to the 40s along the coast while snow flurries persisted from Lake Superior to Kentucky and New England.
